The Tournament:

Shanghai Sees Continued Success, Renews Title Sponsorship
Good fortune continues to shine on the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000. In its first four years in 2009-2012, Shanghai was awarded ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Tournament of the Year, as voted by the ATP players. Rolex recently renewed its title sponsorship of the only ATP World Tour Masters event in the Chinese region.

About Shanghai

Shanghai, on China's central coast, is the country's biggest city and a global financial hub. Its heart is the Bund, a famed waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era buildings. Across the Huangpu River rises the Pudong district's futuristic skyline, including 632m Shanghai Tower and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, with distinctive pink spheres. Sprawling Yu Garden has traditional pavilions, towers and ponds.

The reasons to visit Shanghai:

Shanghai is China's largest and richest city: China's biggest and most prosperous city oozes an atmosphere of vitality and rival New York and Paris in terms of modernity.

A Blend of Eastern and Western Cultures: Shanghai's colonial legacy combined with Chinese culture has created a unique fusion of East and West.

Ease of Onward Trips: From Shanghai it is easy to travel to Xian to see the Terracotta Army or up to Beijing to see the Forbidden City and the Great Wall of China, or to Guilin to see the beautiful karst landscape.

Shanghai's gorgeous night scene: One of the main highlights that will linger in visitors' mind. As night descends the entire city is lit up by colorful lights.

Shanghai is a world famous destination with classic gardens, colonial architecture, tall skyscrapers, tranquil water towns and museums.

Rafa faces almost all the same players as in Beijing. Pouille, Grigor and Kyrgios may be in store for him after the first round.

Hope Roger can at least reach finals. He faces Goffin in QF and Goffin is just coming off a title win in Tokyo. But, I am not worried about him as he is generally easy to tame.

I see that Chung beat RBA in straights, DelPo won a tight one v. Basilashvili, and F. Lopez beat Karlovic in 2 TBs.

Even Nadal is playing so well, a lot more agressive and also his serve is working so well I wouldn't mind if he has a early exit in Shanghai, skipping Basel, playing very well in Paris and ready for the Masters, this year is one of the few times that he in the best conditions (not injuries) and it's about time that he can get that tournament under his belt

You want to see him kill himself to win the Masters, Why..the surface was tailor made for Roger , and favors a player like Novak..it would take a perfect storm for Rafa to win..meaning One of the younglings(Sasha or Nicky) plus Delpo who probably won't qualify to slow Roger..I never been an advocate of that tournament , even when Sampras was king.

I don’t think he would kill himself winning the Masters which I’m sure he would love to win but what I can’t understand is why after to win the USO he is playing these tournaments in Asia instead of resting a little bit more. But again, if he skips Basel (hope he will) then it would be much better

It's the same reason that Federer, an injured Raonic , and everyone else exhausted by the season is still playing. It's the reason why despite everything they added the Laver Cup into an already

Rafa won the USO, then he played two singles and two doubles in the Laver Cup and now Beijing and Shanghai
Is Raonic playing?

Raonic tried playing in the Japan Open and retired after one game with a calf injury, this was after being off for 7 weeks. The commentators openly questioned than other than money why he would risk coming back prematurely.

I know that Rafa and Roger got hefty appearance fees for the Laver Open; This was a new addition to the schedule. Mind you, I'm not condemning the players, but the financial lure of getting major $$$ for the Asian swing and the late fall tour contributes more than somewhat to these players over extending themselves.

They figure they need to make the money while they can, again, who am I to judge?

3 retirements..they should give back their appearance fees and also receive a fine.. How many times have Roger or Rafa retired in matches over the past ten plus years.. I would say less than 5, SMH

agree with you, retirements are sometimes dishonest, especially for crowd who paid to see some decent matchs

I would say, that retirements at such late part of the season are obvious. Last two years I noticed a lot of retirements in October matches, also this year US Open there was a lot of them.
So I would not generalize, most of them are for a reason. I would just point finger at Kyrgios. He had great Beijing tournament, but today I do not really believe it was an injury. He has some bruises, but this one was pure mental in my eyes.
