Interesting news indeed. Surprising to go all the way to the Middle East to play one unplanned tourney and then go back home for Miami.

Anyone know what the player field looks like for Dubai?

The player field here:

top seed was Aggie Radwanska until today's news.
It's interesting to note, Venus took a wild card two days ago as well.

The Williams sisters want to do some shopping in Dubai :)
Why not? life is too short  and the weather is better than this time of the year in USA.

I imagine it had more to do with appearance fees than anything else ;). When you're as big a star as Serena and the next two biggest stars aren't playing you can negotiate a BIG ol paycheck.

Also surprising SK that she pulled out of this tournament last year and they gave her a big zero. I wonder who made the first contact.

Venus started it a few years ago. Everyone wondered

why she would play such a nothing event. The Sheiks

have big coin. It must have been good cause the next year

Serena and several other big names went. Now its a big

deal event.

For Serena there is also points and needed match play for

Miami to consider.

No- it sounds more like getting some matches under her belt before Miami. Like Serena has said before she's not playing for the money she's playing for history. She has enough money that will last her a couple of life times. If she were interested that much in money she would be playing every tournament the WTA has to offer.

Or starting her own candy company? No! Serena is too smart to do that, but the Dominating Empress is not

Special: It is known that Serena is also quite frugal. I also think its

about getting some match play under her belt, but what if she can

gain some points, Get needed match play, get in some duty-free

shopping, and make some good money all at the same time.

Plus a Tease and jab at IW as a bonus.

Yes she and her sister are very frugal. Venus said once before that she do not want to end up like some atheletes who go bankrupt so she's very careful with her money. She also said that she always remember what Oprah told her "to make sure she is the one signing all of her cheques."

Guys - since Serena got a wild card what does that mean for the Aggie?
