Söderling may come back at the Paris Masters

A Swedish article:

http://www.expressen.se/sport/tennis/soderling-hoppas-fort--farande-pa-comeback/

All he can say about the comeback is that he tries. If his physical condition allows it, he'd like to return at Bercy.

I'd like to see him back. I think his game is on Tsonga and Berdych's level but I think he has better mental abilites as shown by beating Nadal and Federer on his way to two RG finals.

That'd be awesome. Was searching for news on him a few weeks back. Hope it goes well for him if he does come back as he left a considerable void in the top 10. He was a legitimate challenge to any of the top players on his best days.

He has zero ranking points, so how does he expect to be part of the draw of a Masters Series?

Protected ranking I think. Pablo Cuevas was in the main draw for the US Open due to his protected ranking after he had missed the entire 2012 season and pretty much 99 percent of this season.

Deserves protected ranking for such a long absence. He was world number 4 when he had to stop playing after making monkeys out of Berdych and Ferrer back to back.

One thing that crossed my mind is the timing. Exactly 2 years since he left. Bans typically last 2 years. Now he did look legitimately sick against Tomic at Wimbledon where you could see he was sweating profusely and looked well out of it, but you have to wonder. I sincerely hope it was just mono as I like the guy and wouldn't like if it turned out it was due to a failed test and subsequent ban.

That's possible, but here's what the ATP site says about protected ranking, and I don't know if Soderling did everything needed to qualify:

Q. What is a protected ranking and who is eligible?

A. A player may petition the Executive Chairman & President for an Entry Protection when he is physically injured and does not compete in any tennis event for a minimum period of six months. The written petition must be received within six months of his last tournament.

The Entry Protection shall be a position in the Emirates ATP Rankings, as determined by the player's average Emirates ATP Rankings position during the first three months of his injury. The Entry Protection shall be for entry into the main draw or qualifying competition or for special exempt consideration. The Entry Protection shall not be used for seeding purposes, Lucky Loser consideration or for entry into the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

The Entry Protection shall be in effect for either the first nine tournaments that the player competes in using the Entry Protection (excluding wild cards and entries as a Direct Acceptance with his current position in the Emirates ATP Rankings) or for the period up to nine months beginning with the first tennis event that the player competes in, whichever occurs first.

It's a shame you posted this. Soderling doesn't deserve it. Not every injury or every sickness is a cover-up for a failed drug test.

I very much doubt it is, just saying the timing is alarming. I don't in any way suspect him of being banned personally.

Shows how harmful silent bans are. Once people get to know about one silent ban, they start to suspect any strange injury/withdrawal/retirement to be a silent ban.

That's true, which is why I think there should be no such thing as a silent ban, no matter who they are.

Wonder will Magnus Norman be able to coach both Soderling and Wawrinka if Soderling returns? He brought both to great career highs.

We should understand him, certain people believe that mono is the illness that lasts for 3 hours and only while you play Djokovic. You don't even see the doctor, but they tell you about it anyway 3 months later when they test your blood. So all this with Soderling having mono for longer than 3 hours is extremely fishy. ;)

Can't tell whether or not you're being serious. But Soderling and Norman parted ways quite a while before Soderling was suspended...I mean, before he took sick leave. He went through a couple of coaches (Pistolesi and Rosengren, I believe) before he disappeared from tennis.

We'll see. But I'll be (pleasantly) surprised if he ever comes back.

And by the way...Just kidding about the suspension comment. So everyone stay calm.

Genuinely didn't realize he had a new coach actually ;) Either way it'll be great to see him back and I hope his energy levels will be ok.

As I'm sure you know some people get worse cases of mono than others. It ruined Ancic's career and has derailed Sod for a long time. Roger just had a really bad 6-7 months due to it and the lack of practice he had as a result.

I disagree tented. I had the impression they tried to hide the fact that Cilic got suspended too. He cited injury for pulling out of Wimbledon and there was no press statement of the ITF or anything.

You are only right if EVERY positive doping test is publicly disclosed. I am not sure this is the case. Could very well be that they wish to preserve the reputation of tennis. Soderling is a big name.

I know I was making fun of what front suggested.
