Tournament Info

Tier: Premier Prize Money: $2,413,663 Surface: Hard Director: Eugene Lapierre
Since 1892, the best women's tennis players in the world have showcased their skills at what is now known as the Rogers Cup; only Wimbledon and the US Open have longer histories.

Part of the Emirates Airline US Open Series, the tournament rotates each year between Toronto and Montréal, with the ATP staging its version of the event the same week in the alternate city. Three times it has been named the WTA's Premier Tournament Of The Year - in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

The event has been won by a plethora of all-time greats, with Chris Evert and Monica Seles leading the way with four titles each, followed by Martina Navratilova and Serena Williams with three apiece. Seles has an especially memorable history, the first of her four straight triumphs coming in 1995 in Toronto - her first tournament back after a two-year, three-month absence from the WTA. Navratilova has the most doubles titles, with her sixth in 2006 being the last title of her career.

The draw REVISED No Serena Williams, Garbiñe MUGURUZA, and Coco Vandeweghe

It's a shame Bencic is still injured and unable to play and defend the title :(

Kerber is not playing in this tournament?

Is that a question or statement?

I am curious too as she pulled out of her previous tourney with some injury.

Work for a detective :shy: OR - you could see in the draw above - which is revised - and find the answer;)

where is lazy Scone...Venus and Serena have held the WTA afloat for years...most of their contemporaries are retired or banned from tennis..they are still there winning and keeping the tour relevant...at least the mediocre players like Keys Coco McHale and other gals are trying...Scone just seems disinterested..the way she lost to Sveta showed me that this girl is not a champion...the way she hugged Sveta like she was thanking her for beating her..

ES out in the first round again, this time to Camila. A 36-year old Venus shows more desire and motivation. This girl.... :cover

ES problem is she has probably more power than Hingis did when she was great but she doesn't have the consistency because Sloane doesn't strike every ball with a real purpose. Next time watch Novak when he plays, he is trying to gain control of every rally so he can drive the Bus. I think Sloane needs to overhaul her game but I seriously doubt that she has the dedication and mentally to do so.IMO

Mcfail only bring her best against Serena. Anyone else she faces she folds like a cheap suit. And Serena says it all the time and people get piss at her for telling the truth.

Sloane has no fight. That is her problem. She has the physical ability to be top five, but nothing mentally. She isn't exciting to watch because of her lack of desire to win.

This is the entire locker room sweetie. They all play Serena like it's their last match on Earth. They didn't play Sharapova, Vika, Clijsters or Li Na that way even when they were at the top of the rankings. :nono

Mugu withdraws from the tournament. That makes Kerbie the #1 seed.

the way McHale played Serena was scary, never seen her play that good.I detect a bit of tension between her and Serena...Scone has all the talent in the world to be great but she spends all her energy hating on the sisters...I wish all the opportunities she gets fall on Taylor Townsend.

Lots of upsets yesterday: Sveta over Petra in straights, Pavly over Aga in 3, Kucova dismisses crowd favorite Genie in 3, Kasatkina over Vinci in straights. Kerbie just barely hanging on w/ 2 back-to-back 3 setters against Lucic-Baroni and Svitolina. Venus looks terrible. I don't know why she's out there and not even close to 60%. Even w/ this limited movement and serve, Keys needs 3 sets to send her packing.

Great turn around by Halep..at times she can prove that she can be the best ball striker on the tour( I was very impressed when I saw her play live last year in Cincy). If she can beef up her serve, keep her head and stay away from Serena she may win a major soon

Remember Venus's Sjogren's Syndrome.. At this point a in her career, a non grand slam format doesn't provide her ample time for her body to recover.. that's too bad

I don't think this was Sjogren's related. I think she has an injury that she's not talking about. You should have seen those serves. She was putting in 75-80 mph serves the entire match. She did it in Sunday's final as well and that's why she lost to Konta.

The real question should be "why and how is Venus even competing?" My mom thinks "she has no life!" That's an over-simplification, but I do remember in my younger years how tennis was the center of my universe! In the region, I knew all, and they knew me! People joked I probably had more tennis clothes than regular wear! When you play everyday, teach, and make the rounds competing all over the city, the closets had to be full of clothes, bureaus of wrist bands and socks, and deciding what shoe to wear considering the court surface and speed! :dodgy:  :p
