The Tournament:

Held at the Autotron Rosmalen exhibition complex in southern Netherlands about 7 km east of 's-Hertogenbosch the week after the French Open, the Topshelf Open serves as a chance for many players to get acclimated to the grass in preparation for Wimbledon. Launched as an ATP tournament in 1990, it became a joint event in 1996

About Den Bosch

s-Hertogenbosch: literally "The Duke's Forest" in English, and historically in French: Bois-le-Duc) is a city and municipality in the southern Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of North Brabant. In speech, the Dutch seldom use the formal 's-Hertogenbosch but rather the colloquial Den Bosch. Den Bosch means "The Forest". The duke in question was Duke Henry of Brabant, whose family had owned a large estate at nearby Orthen for at least four centuries. He founded a new town located on some forested dunes in the middle of a marsh. At age 26, he granted 's-Hertogenbosch city rights and the corresponding trade privileges in 1185.

The birthplace and home of one of the greatest painters of the northern Reneissance, Hieronymus Bosch, 's-Hertogenbosch suffered a catastrophic fire in 1463, which the then (approximately) 13-year-old Bosch probably witnessed; presumably, this fire provided inspiration for the fiery hell-scapes that would later make Bosch famous.

Bertens likes the clay, not a huge surprise there. Domi's slide continues. Maybe she should fall out of the top 16 where nothing is expected of her and she'll turn things. I'm surprised Kvitova isn't playing in these warmups.

Not sure why the WTA chose to give this tournament preferential treatment of Nottingham... but congrats to the unseeded victor Anett Kontaveit
