This thread is actually Clay Death's idea:

"what kind of a year do you expect him to have in 2014?

what is your best case scenario for nadal in 2014?

and what is your worst case scenario for him in 2014?

you have the floor. have at it and have fun.

who wants to fire off the first shot?"

I just wanted to break it off into a fresh thread.

Alright, since I moved your question over, I'll start.

I think Nadal could have a very strong 2014, as he'll be going into it with a pretty/very strong finish, depending on the next 2 mos.

Obviously, my best case is for him to win all of the Slams! :laydownlaughing

OK, best, maybe AO and RG. Sprinkling in: defending clay, a good Wimby, and a good HC season.

Worst case: to lose RG to Djokovic. (Well, that's just honest.) Other, and even worse: to have knee problems resurface.

well I will start by saying that he may produce a rather strong effort this time around at RG. he was shaky this year but that changes in 2014.

he will not be coming back from a 7 month layoff.

I will have more to say later. stay tuned.

I need to think about his schedule:

for instance he may head to rio. they will have a new event called the rio open.

it starts on feb. 17th. it will be a 500 event. so I am very happy about that.

rio really needed such an event.

in fact tomorrow we need to start looking at the 2014 schedule and try to figure out where nadal is likely to go.

ok I am prepared to make my best case and worst case scenarios:

1. best case scenario:

RG+ Wimbledon
rio open (assuming he goes)
monte carlo
Barcelona
Madrid
rome

**and I don't really care if he fails to win a single event after that. that is more than enough. in fact its really better that he loses early at all the hard court events after Wimbledon. that may just save the knees and we can see him play for another year or 2. also I think it will be relatively difficult to repeat what he did this year in montreal, cinci, and flushing meadows. we will just have to see.

worst case scenario:

same scenario as above but no Wimbledon.

******we will talk about the hard courts tomorrow. to answer the questions properly, we do have to include the hard courts also. you just know that he is going to play the Australian open, indian wells, Toronto, cincy, u.s. open, shanghai, and WTF. he will at least play those anyway.

For a guy who's so often prepared to be "unhappy" with Nadal, I have to say that's not an especially ambitious 2014. Well, OK, you mention 2 Slams. Still, for one who expects so much, you project not really so much possibility.

I would make my predictions here if I was allowed without being berated. The days of predictions are gone.

I think he could have a very good AO.

Best case scenario: wins 2 Majors
Worst case scneario: wins 0 Majors for the first time in 10 years.

I really don't think Wimbledon is suddenly going to be his worst shot for a major, I give all credit to the 2 players who upset him in 12 and 13, but hopefully some of the health issues won't be present in 2014. I do think he was physically and mentally exhausted after the FO win this year.

good thing I am not one of his coaches. he would never get a break from me.

and he thought his uncle was hard on him.

I would be happy with that channel slam. and healthy, fit, and ready to go rafa for 2015. that really is the best case scenario for me anyway.

that, however, does not mean that I would be happy with him.

Oh, don't be so dramatic. The problem is not that you get berated for your predictions so much as you berate others when they make an argument that some of yours are a bit over the top. If you're going bold in your predictions or statements, you're going to meet with some opposition. Suck it up. If you don't find our level of discourse to your liking here, no one is forcing you to stay.

Well, at least you admit you're a tough sell. But I'm going to hold you to being happy with the Channel Slam, if it happens, OK?

Predictions for 2014

What do you want to see happen in 2014 ?

I would love to see Andy win the Australian and Novak take the French . I also wish that the stars align themselves for Roger Federer in one of the slams and he makes a decent run and hopefully wins one

Also I want the young stars like Jerzy Milos and Grigor to start going deep in slams regularly and win 1-2 masters 1000 events

I think he'll win Oz and Paris, but after this, it's too far to say. But I think he'll give Oz the same Evil Eye he gave Flushing Meadows, and therefore he'll be nigh-well impossible to resist.

He can win Paris at 70%, and I can't imagine the type of daydreamer who'd bet against him there.

For Wimbledon, it'll depend on what shape he's in and if he can get in a practice tourney before it. He was woeful this year and Darcis was able to win all the big points. He needs to come to Wimbledon up to speed to have a shot. If he gets to week 2, then fuggedaboutit, as they say.

The US Open is really too far away to predict anything. Actually, so is Oz, but then that's me! :p

RE: Predictions for 2014

Slowly we should see youngsters make a move. Maybe another semi for Jerzy, who I think is going to love Wimbledon over the next few years, but whether that means he'll ever make the final or win it, nobody knows. It'll be his best slam, I think, and maybe at one of the majors we'll see two youngsters bust through to the semis.

I think if Federer doesn't commit to a schedule and play more, he's going into further decline. I don't know if changing rackets will help him but he needs to get his confidence back first. It's natural at his age that he begins to feel the pace. Also, the makeweights smell blood. They're actually putting it up to him, the cheeky blighters.

Murray has to step up the next level, or else just be the guy who takes the odd slam that the others let slip. He has to try shove his way back into the race for #1, too. It's important for his legacy. It's all related, but Murray needs a much higher level season in 2014 than 2013. I think he's going to do well.

Djoker will find that 2011 is more an admonishment than an inspiration. It'll be the season that he looks at and finds himself judged by, not least by himself. I don't think he'll get back to that level - but then again, I didn't think he'd get there in the first place, so what do I know?! :snigger

I've predicted Nadal in Moxie's thread...

Novak wins the AO and FO! Jerzy and Fed make a splash at Wimbledon, but I expect Andy to win. DelPo makes a slam final. That would be a good year to me. Oh, and Jerzy makes the WTF.

that looks more like a wish list to me.

so is it a wish list or a prediction list?

I really hope you're not suggesting that is how Andy won his 2 slams.

RE: Predictions for 2014

What I want to see next year:

- Rafa wins the Aussie so that he can get 2 of each slam :D

- Also, I hope Rafa (anyone really) can deny Novak another french lols.

- Then dont care who wins the US open and Wimbly ... Andy, Novak, Rafa or Delpo?

- I hope Janowicz will step up next year. He seems to be injured ... a lot ...

- I hope Dimitrov will just win something or fade .. I hate people always touting him to be the next best when he hasn't done a thing and keeps losing early.

- Nishikori to get to top 10

- Karlovic, isner, raonic, querrey ... to learn how to return serve and hit rally balls. As an American, I'm forced to watch countless isner serving clinics *shudder*

- For Ryan Harrison not to meet any of the big 4 + Ferrer in the 1st or 2nd round of any slam/masters 1000

- for it to be 2015 already so we can have an extra week of grass court play
