In light of Stan winning his first slam title. I thought I would pose the question of;

"Who would least surprise you to win a Major?"

Stan was definitely on my short list. I've always liked his game, but he just seemed to struggle against the elite. Now I want to emphasize, I'm not saying players accurately predicted to win a slam. Just somebody it wouldn't shock you if they did. Who has the game to get it done?

Birdman wouldn't shock me a bit, but he is highly inconsistent. There was a time when I felt Isner could do it if his serve was on fire for a fortnight. Tsonga has the game, but much like Thomas, can't seem to bring it all the time.

Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, and Murray. ;)

OK, seriously, del Potro has shown he can but don't know if he will again.

Agree about Berdych and Tsonga: they don't have the steadiness to go all the way. Perhaps they, too, need Magnus Norman.

I'd love for Dimitrov to continue his climb up the rankings, and win one.

There are a lot of players out there that has the game to win it, but not the mental capacity. Even Stan was in that category I bet up until his win over Nole. I think that win was a huge get over the hump moment for him. Now, he feels he can beat anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Take Almagro. One of the best backhands in the game, a very solid forehand and he is always top 5 in service games, or aces or whatever, I mean, he has a great serve. How come he is never winning anything, on clay or otherwise? Upstairs is his problem. He can never hold it together for more than a set and a half. Come up with your own example of a player that has got game but is a headcase. There are many.

Almagro is the poster child for the "snatching-defeat-from-the jaws-of-victory" set. His h2h against the elite players (yes I included Ferrer) is dismal.

Nadal 10-0

Ferrer 13-0

Fed 5-0

Djoker 3-0

Murray 3-1

Haha. I should have included I meant other then the guys who won't let anyone else win a Slam.

Even though he isn't playing, I really though Soderling was going to win one before it was all said and done.

After watching Almagro snatch defeat from the jaws of victory here last year against Ferrer, I have zero confidence in him. That was one of the most absurd chokes I've ever seen.

One player that I really grew to like. Sad how illness (not injury) pretty much ended his career just as he was hitting his stride.

As far as winning a major goes, I would be surprised if anyone other than the usual suspects won, simply because it would mean that he took out some of them on the way. That said, I'd say Del Potro wouldn't totally surprise me, and maaaaaaaaybe Berdych.

We were close to seeing another one today. :puzzled

For the record, I never expected Stan to ever win a slam. Never. His fourth set meltdown is why for most of his career, I've seen him in a similar light as Almagro. For me, the credit goes to finding the right coach who was able to help him navigate the mental hurdles that he could not get over by himself.

:snigger Somehow, I don't think that was a typo. It made me smile.

it would not and will not surprise me when milos raonic and sir grigor of dimitrov step through the "i have won a major" window..:)

also while we are on this theme.. I still think rafa/wafa can at least equal if not go past federers 17. but also that Federer could still add to his haul. (Wimbledon ??)

if raonic and dimitrov do not win majors I will suffer in silence and eat my strawberry sundae..oh hold on, i am about to eat one of those anyway.

i have also decided that borna coric will win majors..i based this on seeing him on telly vs murray (davis cup) and the fact he is winning futures events and his rank has gone from 700-900 last summer to an even 300 as of last week. he is 17yrs and won junior majors, so its about time again that a junior got to the peak of tennis once again.

Lol no it wasn't. I just thought it captured how I feel about Berd's chances.

Exactly my point. Look at his shots, serve...they are top notch. How is this record even possible? Answer: Headcase.

It's sad to behold really. Almagro definitely shouldn't have losing records like that with his ability. Should try hypnotherapy. Seriously. "When you wake up you will no longer fear Nadal, Federer, Murray or Djokovic."

I feel that both Dimi and Milos will contend for slams in a few years, but not right now. In 2-3 years perhaps.

Maybe I should have called this thread, "Players you would be suprised to see win a Slam" lol.

Ferrer would be on that list. I'm not sure he could beat 2 of the top guys in one event.

Some very long shots:

Tsonga, Gulbis, Dimitrov, and of course Pipo Volandri.

Tsonga is almost unstoppable when he's on. I wouldn't be surprised at all if I saw him lifting the Wimbledon trophy.

And Almagro's been mentioned here. Norman seems to make players mental giants like Söderling and Wawrinka. Maybe Nico should hire Norman and he'd start beating big names.
