The Tournament:

The Open Sud de France (formerly known as the Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon) is a professional tennis tournament played on indoor hard courts. It is currently part of the ATP World Tour 250 series of the ATP Tour. It was held annually at the Palais des Sports de Gerland in Lyon, France, in October, from 1987 through to 2009, before being relocated to Montpellier in 2010. The tournament takes place at the Montpellier Arena, holding 7,500 spectators.

The tournament is one of four French events of the ATP World Tour 250 series, along with the Open 13, the Moselle Open, and the Lyon Open. There was no event in 2011 as the tournament moved to a January slot in 2012.

About Lyon:

Lyon or Lyons is the third-largest city and second-largest urban area of France. It is located in the country's east-central part at the confluence of the rivers Rhône and Saône, about 470 km (292 mi) south of Paris, 320 km (199 mi) north of Marseille and 56 km (35 mi) northeast of Saint-Étienne. Inhabitants of the city are called Lyonnais.

Lyon had a population of 513,275 in 2015. It is the capital of the Metropolis of Lyon and the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The Lyon metropolitan area had a population of 2,265,375 in 2014. The city is known for its cuisine and gastronomy, and historical and architectural landmarks; part of it is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Lyon was historically an important area for the production and weaving of silk. Lyon played a significant role in the history of cinema: it is where Auguste and Louis Lumière invented the cinematograph. It is also known for its light festival, the Fête des Lumières, which begins every 8 December and lasts for four days, earning Lyon the title of Capital of Lights.

Still the strongest field this week, despite the WDs
I would argue that Cordoba is strong, with clay players. Different surface.

Cordoba has no top 10 players in the field, here there are 2 of them.

I have spotted here a player who I have not heard much about thusfar.
He is from Finland, Ruusuvuori. Came through qualifications and won in his first rounds, knocking in the top 100 door.
He has turned pro late at 19 and after only one year he is ready to join the big league, impressive.

I was going to point him out, too. Another young one to keep an eye on. Impressive collection of vowels in his name. Have you seen him play yet?

Dimitrov out in his first match to Gregoire Barrere in 3. Shapo out in his first one to countryman Pospisil rather meekly. Gasquet beat Simon.

Nice match between Gasquet and Lopez, for those of you 1HBH cultists. Lopez took the first in a TB.

Gasquet retired against Pospisil. I think he has a groin injury.
I watched some of his match v. Lopez yesterday and he definitely pulled something. They were speculating his back, but there was a bit of grimacing, etc. I was surprised he pulled it off in the end. I wasn't surprised to see he'd retired today.
