I got behind on starting this thread, but already the upsets are mounting. Seeds 4, 5 and 6 are sent packing on opening day itself. Aga, Venus and Vinci shown the door. For extra measure, seed 12 Timea also bite the dust.

In doubles, yesterday the #2 seeds Caroline Garcia and Kristina Malendovic were ousted. Today, the #1 seeds William Sisters were ousted in straight sets 6-3 6-4 by CZE team. So, the doubles medals are now wide open.

1. Cornet did not get schooled. It was an interesting match. Serena got broken three times in the first set alone. Nobody would call that kind of performance as schooling. :cover

2. The players don't decide in which part of the draw they will get in. :puzzled

Today we had multiple upsets. Needless to say, #1 Serena going out in straight sets is the biggest one. #3 Garbine ate double order of breadsticks served hot by Monica Puig. Also, #8 Kuzzy lost as well to new British Phenom Konta.

On the opening day itself, we lost #4, #5 and #6 Seeds.

That leaves only two of the top 8 seeds reaching QF, the two being #2 Kerrber and #7 Keys.
But, this seems to be the norm in WTA these days. :cover

p.s. Petra is the only other big name still there.

....ten years from now no one will remember Cornet...Serena will be the standard of the tour...her stats will overshadow the tour not Cornet s three wins over Serena.:ras:

That has nothing to do with your erroneous description of the match. Serena did not school Cornet in this match even though she won it.

GSM, it's funny how this thread really became the real story of the Rio Games:clap.. Just a shame we didn't spend as much time on it probably due to Serena's departure darn it

Well Serena is not alone, she has plenty of company. In fact Serena can take pride as

1. she is the only #1 seed that did not fall in the very first round. Of the 5 events in Rio Olympics, in all other events the #1 seed failed right in the opening round.

2. in her case it is very clear that she was compromised physically. I am not sure whether the upset of any of the other #1 seeds can be attributed to obvious handicap.
