In the $100,000 ITF event in Vancouver, the Odlum Brown Open, Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia won the final today in a thrilling 3 setter, beating Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine, 3-6. 6-2, 7-6(3). Gajdosoava was down 3-5 in the final set, and it the semi she was down 2-5 in the third set against Madison Brengle and came back and won 5 straight games.
Gajdosova is a former top 25 player, Tsurenko, who I had a brief chat with around noontime was as high as 60th. She made her own way from Kiev, and drew a great deal of support from the crowd. You can see my pic of Jarmila on the Tennis Frontier Goggle Page. It was very hot during the weekend, and down at court side it certainly felt around 32 celcius, 90 Fahrenheit, when I was clicking away taking pics.
I was really impressed by the play of American Asia Muhammad, very tall and with some good movement and power. She lost to Lesia in the other semi, 4-6, 3-6. She came in ranked 363rd and beat Ula Radwanska, the number 4 seed in the first round.
