I don't really understand all the fine-points of the ATP ranking system, but I noticed Novak's huge point total and how far ahead of everyone else he is. If he wins the US Open he'll have over 16,000 points, which I think would be record (although I think the current point system doesn't go back to Federer's peak).
Anyhow, if he wins the US Open he'll be at 12785 points in the live ranking. If he defeats #2 Murray in the final, Andy will have 8390 - that's a 4395 led with three big tournaments to go. Even if Andy won all three, and the ATP without losing a match, and Novak didn't play for the rest of the year, he'd only add 3500 points. I'm not sure if Andy could make up the other almost 900 points in another way.
The point being, if Novak wins the US Open I think he clinches the year-end #1. Of course that's a big if, but regardless of how he does the rest of the year I think its safe to say he's got the #1 locked up - unless Andy sweeps everything going forward, including the US Open.
Yeah, right.
