As it is now, I find myself hoping the Americans lose in the first rounds so that I won't be subjected by ESPN and TC to watching them. Once the Yanks are out of contention, they get to the matches that are actually interesting.
Ha! I do the same. The other day, El Dude described getting up early to watch Federer, only to turn on the TV to see Venus Williams. That is annoying. They were only showing her because she's from the US. Period. They could have been showing Federer -- the greatest of all time -- but they were showing Venus, whose chances of winning Paris were only slightly better than mine.
I always root for Isner to lose, because I can't stand his style, and the "Big Man" tennis. If guys 6'7" and up are going to be the future of tennis, I'm done. Nothing is more boring than watching John Isner try to figure out how to get out of his own way, when he realizes he didn't hit an ace, and now has to do something.
As for the young players in Riotbeard's list, Jack Sock has the most potential, in terms of game, his head, and his age.
Ryan Harrison needs a sports psychologist STAT! Without that, he isn't going anywhere but down.
DY wins a few matches here and there, every few years, followed by the pathetic US-media hype, which goes away just as quickly when everyone remembers who they were hyping.
Remember this bit from 2011?
- "Hey, what's the headline?"
- "Donald Young beat Andy Murray!"
- "So the future of US tennis beat the British No. 1?!"
- "That's right! Donald "GOAT" Young beat the future Wimbledon Champion!"
[The next day ...]
- "Hey, what's the headline?"
- "Donald Young lost to Tommy Robredo."
- "Yeah, but it was a competitive match, right? Let me guess: three tiebreaks!"
- "Nope. Ate a bagel in the first, and somehow scratched out 4 games in the second."
- "Oh ... I see ... so ... um ... what's the headline?"
- "'Spanish Veteran Sparks Renewed Search for any American Male Who Can Hold a Racquet and Chew Gum at the Same Time.'"
