Let's be honest. Right now yanks, we are lucky to have John Isner. I am a watching a replay of Donald Young and I wonder if he might be our best hope for a regular in the top 50 once isner is gone... What does everyone else think?

How old is Andre and Steffi's boy now? He is my next hope, genetically speaking. Does he even play?

No idea. I don't think so. I think Andre wants him involved in team sports (last interview I heard). Andre wishes he played team sports.

What a godsend it would have been if they had shoved a racket in that kids hands age 3. Impossible shoes to fill but...

You only have to follow one of the greatest men of all time and probably the great female player of all time. Have fun...

Donald Young looked very good today. And I agree, that we're lucky to have Isner. People like to denigrate him, but he's at least a potential spoiler. Young has put a lot of work in the gym, and he's much stronger. I think our best hope is the next generation, but for now, Isner carries the standard, and maybe Young is ready to step up, a bit.

Yeah, I think Young (in terms of tangibles) doesn't have the weaknesses that plague sock and johnson. He has a more complete game, plus the left advantage. Looked very natural on the clay. If he can keep that noggin together...

^I will only say that Donald Young looked matured today. We'll see what happens going forward.

Agreed. I am not projecting a run into the top 20 by any means.

As it is now, I find myself hoping the Americans lose in the first rounds so that I won't be subjected by ESPN and TC to watching them. Once the Yanks are out of contention, they get to the matches that are actually interesting.

If DY is the next best hype for US Tennis, I'm moving to Monaco. :nono

^ And you can join that great heritage of players proudly flying the Monagasque colors…oh, wait, they don't play for Monaco. :nono Well, at least you won't have to pay taxes. ;)

Nobody said Donald Young was the next great thing. We're just looking at what the options are. (Note the not so nationalistic and apologetic subject line.) Anyway, I know you know how to use espn3.com, in case they're showing a US player you don't want to watch on ESPN or TC.

Anyway, with Serena out, I wonder how many Americans there will be to disrupt your viewing, come the 2nd week. We're currently a work in progress, though much better on the women's side.

Ha! I do the same. The other day, El Dude described getting up early to watch Federer, only to turn on the TV to see Venus Williams. That is annoying. They were only showing her because she's from the US. Period. They could have been showing Federer -- the greatest of all time -- but they were showing Venus, whose chances of winning Paris were only slightly better than mine. ;)

I always root for Isner to lose, because I can't stand his style, and the "Big Man" tennis. If guys 6'7" and up are going to be the future of tennis, I'm done. Nothing is more boring than watching John Isner try to figure out how to get out of his own way, when he realizes he didn't hit an ace, and now has to do something.

As for the young players in Riotbeard's list, Jack Sock has the most potential, in terms of game, his head, and his age.

Ryan Harrison needs a sports psychologist STAT! Without that, he isn't going anywhere but down.

DY wins a few matches here and there, every few years, followed by the pathetic US-media hype, which goes away just as quickly when everyone remembers who they were hyping.

Remember this bit from 2011?

- "Hey, what's the headline?"

- "Donald Young beat Andy Murray!"

- "So the future of US tennis beat the British No. 1?!"

- "That's right! Donald "GOAT" Young beat the future Wimbledon Champion!"

[The next day ...]

- "Hey, what's the headline?"

- "Donald Young lost to Tommy Robredo."

- "Yeah, but it was a competitive match, right? Let me guess: three tiebreaks!"

- "Nope. Ate a bagel in the first, and somehow scratched out 4 games in the second."

- "Oh ... I see ... so ... um ... what's the headline?"

- "'Spanish Veteran Sparks Renewed Search for any American Male Who Can Hold a Racquet and Chew Gum at the Same Time.'"

Honestly, from a tennis perspective, I would rather be watching Young than any of the other guys. And if he has opted to put his head down and work hard, I will give him a pass on the dumb things he said from 18-22 or so.

I only watch espn3, so I don't watch much American tennis, as I just go to the match I want. Also you gotta give credit to big john, I think he's done the most possible with his body. He also seems like a pretty nice guy. I do really miss Mardy Fish and Brian Baker, two Americans I could root for and really get to enjoy the tennis. I really liked Mardy's game. It also makes you appreciate Roddick.

Mardy and Brian are the only two I enjoyed watching. After Isner v. Mahut, there was no way I was ever watching John again.

American men's tennis is in a Dark Ages. I wrote a blog or two about this late last year.

Another name to throw in the mix is Denis Kudla.

This slam went better than a lot of recent ones have for your lot. Young and Sock had good tournaments and I think Sock could go far given that he's only 21. Only time will tell. You've got a better looking future than the Brits do after Murray's finished. We're getting excited about Kyle Edmund potentially breaking the top 50, though, so that may not be saying a lot.
