I was researching my next generation series article and noticed that there is a new serving speed record, 166.7mph (268.3 kmh) at least according to Wikipedia. 18-year old American Reilly Opelka, who is 6'10" and won the junior boy's Wimbledon this year.

What is odd is that Sam Groth's 163mph serve is no longer on that list, so I'm questioning this. Can anyone verify this?

EDIT: I'm thinking this is false. I can't even verify if Opelka played the Houston Challenger, which I believe was back in April. Maybe a friend of Reilly's? ;-)

p.s. Anyone guess why I was researching serve speeds for my blog article? ;)

I believe previously because it wasn't an official ATP/ITF event Groth's didn't count as an official record so Karlovic was the holder of fastest serve in an official event. Seems unfair now on Groth 'cos a challenger event shouldn't be number one on the list either imo. That said, that's an insanely fast serve!

You are going to write a blog about serves? Probably something like: "Best servers in the open era". No? Ok, I tried. Oh and regarding Opelka's record, I also think it's false. I mean look at Sam Groth. You mean to tell me that a lanky dude can hit harder than him? :D
(Now that I think of it, an article along the lines of: Serve speeds in the open era, and how innovations in racquet technology have influenced one's serve speed.)

Sounds like a great article idea, but that's not what I'm writing. It was just a bit of research for my Open Era Generations series.
