Did Nadal taint his legacy by being such a sore loser?

CountRogerSDebeste

Quotes like this " Being honest, in these kind of matches I won a lot of times against him," Nadal said.

Just shows the classless nature of Nadal.

Hmm. He was nothing but gracious, at least in the ceremony. I didn't watch the press conference. Or are you just stirring the pot?

p.s. Welcome to Tennis Frontier. I hope your next contribution won't be so negative ;).

I saw the press conf. He did say that. But considering all, I guess that´s ok. I would be kicking people in the face if I were in his place. And what he said is true (unfortunately).

What he said is certainly true. Outside of Wimbledon Rafa was 8-0 in GS matches against Fed, going into this final. I certainly would not call Rafa a sore loser. He was sad after losing and that is indeed natural. What do you expect him to be of full of joy and laughter after losing a GS final, especially when he was a break-up in 5th set. :nono

It was one of the few times Rafa was the favorite and considered the player to beat. Rafa earned his stripes being the hunter for years during Federer' run at the top. Nobody really expected Roger to fight like this and pull it out, especially not in the fifth from break down. The hunter slmost always came back and won. This time, though, the roles were reversed--I personally think Rafa thought he was going to win and Roger viewed himself as the hunter rather than the hunted. I believe that on too many locations in the past, Roger, even though being the hunted, felt as though he was the favorite and should win. I believe that on too many occasions in the past, Roger, even though being the hunted, felt as though he was the favorite and should win. Going into this match, however, I question if things were not reversed and Roger thought he had to scrap and fight to win and Rafa was the one who thought he should win. I believe Rafael was a sincere young man and that he honestly believed back 10 years ago and thereabouts that Roger was the supreme player of the world and should win unless Rafael put some in his very best and fight with grit and guts. It seems to me that Roger this time out may have been more like Rafa was years ago against him. At any rate, it was a great match full of tension and excitement.

Show me a player who isn't a sore loser, and I'll show you a loser...

I have no problem with what Nadal said--it shows his champion's heart. When you look back, you can see from ten years ago comments about Rafa being a grinder who does not have as varied a game, etc. Roger has a champion's heart and he got really tired of this upstart from Mallorca and it showed in his pressers. These guys don't stay at the top unless they get upset at losing. I got no problem with Nadal saying that because it shows you he always thinks if it gets close, he should win against Roger. Roger likely felt the same way until Melbourne of 2009--that was the great crushing loss for him that really and singularly knocked him off the top even after winning New York in 2008; he had lost two great matches to the Spaniard that went five sets. There was a new sheriff in town and he knew it and it hurt. This loss does not hurt Rafa as much, bit it is likely one of his must demoralizing--right up there with the AO in 2014 and the loss at SW19 against Federer in 5 sets in 2007.

Nadal sounds classy and respectful towards Federer.
I really don't see him as a sore loser. Far from it.

What nonsense.

I thought Rafa's comments were actually really nice when I read them - I took it as saying "I am lucky to have won quite a few close matches against Fed, so I can't really complain that this one went against me".

Not sure why some people have to try to stir the pot (same happens with comments by Fed, Murray, Djokovic etc). Just enjoy the tennis!

Why is Toni a sore loser, Isabelle? I don't understand this one either...

Wow, this is the most stupid thing that I can read from a Federer's fan (even that I read many) because
many of them don't like "to lose" but it seems they are not good when they "win"

I hope the author of the OP returns, and knows already that we can be a contentious lot, but we're a welcoming bunch of sods too! :)

I like how Carol took this opportunity to insult all (or at least "many") Federer fans, even when this thread was started by just one, and others chimed in and actually disagreed with him.

Nice one, Carol.

Sorry that you have taken personal my comments but I was referring to many of his fans that losing or winning always they have to say something bad against Nadal when right now they should be just celebrating the back of his idol who finally got the feel what Rafa has felt many times through his career coming back from his injuries and lifting one title after another (he was critized too) and of course better feeling at his 35 years old.
Rafa is a very good loser and his comments after the final are honoring to him one more time. The critics about what he said is totally deplorable and from someone full of hatred, that all

Carol,

There are plenty of Federer fans who respect Nadal exactly as you say, just as there are those Nadal "fans" who always have something bad to say about Federer.

Or, in other words, being a Federer fan does not preclude also being an idiot - and the same goes for Nadal fans, Djokovic fans, Murray fans, etc.

By trying to link the fact that someone said something stupid and inappropriate with the fact that they are a Federer fan, you are indeed trying to paint us all with the same brush, by insinuating a correlation where none exists. As has been pointed out, plenty of Fed fans replied pointing out that the OP is nonsense.

(But I guess you probably know all that and just like stirring things up?)

mightyjeditribble, you're relatively new here (and glad to have you), so you might not know that Carol is our resident NadalSuperFan (aka, Fangirl), just as Front242 is our angry Fedavenger, Herios the I'll-Catch-You-Making-Factual-Errors-Guy, Kieran is a our Irish Poet and I'm, I guess, the Stat Nerd.
