Rafael nadal back to number one for the fifth time, he has over 4680 points, to def, which means he has to win 4 out 5 events to keep number one ranking I'm pretty sure. I think he can do this nadal is the king of clay but its also unlikely? But we will see that happens.

Given that he's only 100 points ahead of Roger, he will be #1 until he fails to defend one of his clay titles, in order: Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid, the French Open. So it really comes down to whether you think he can repeat what he did last year and if not, at what point does he fail to do so. Rome is unlikely to be a factor as he only has 180 points to defend.

My guess would be Monte Carlo. He'll be coming back rusty and vulnerable to a young and hungry field. Once he loses #1 at MC, he won't have a chance to get it back until Halle at the earliest when Roger has to defend 500 points, and probably not until Wimbledon.

I mean yea if he's to lose it would be monte Carlo or Madrid, grass court season hes unlikely to get it back based on form. Most likely us open series is where can get Ahead.

The same was true for Roger early on; figured he couldn't defend all those points and win his 1st 3 tourneys! I think he was fortunate to have a cakewalk to the final of AO and survived Cilic! I knew he wouldn't come close to taking the double again in IW/Miami! I was surprised by the early exit last week though!:nono:  :banghead:

I agree federer AO draw to the final was cakewalk, but unlike federer nadal gets to def on his favorite surface at least.

If Rafa comes back anything like healthy, he can defend MC. As much as RG is perfect for him, so is MC. However, I almost hope he drops Barcelona this year, in which case, I think he'd be giving up the #1. I don't care. Protect RG.

If he wins MC, he is not going to drop BC(!). BC will have weaker field and Rafa would have confidence from winning MC.

If Rafa does not lose at MC, his next best bet to lose would be at Madrid, which he does not particularly like also.

My point is, he probably should drop something in the clay season, for the sake of protecting RG. He has 500 pts to defend in Barcelona, and 1000 to defend in Madrid. Personally, I don't care which one he drops, but I don't think he should play both. Same as with Roger, the point is protecting the Major. Not keeping the #1.

Nadal should play Davis cup, it will fire him up for the clay court season.

Ok, by dropping you meant skipping the event and not losing in it. But, I am very positive that Rafa will not miss a single one of the four warm up events by way of protection. If he has actual injury at the time, he will drop. So, just forget about Rafa dropping Barcelona. According to Rafa, Barcelona is the world's most important clay tournament.

Yes, I mean skip. He's skipped it before, a couple of times.

Did he do by way of protection, or was he actually injured.
Not injured. He skipped it the inaugural year of Madrid, I think, so as not to crowd the schedule...though that was '09, so he had sore knees that whole spring. And I'm sure there was another one, but I'll look it up. It is the closest he has to a hometown tourney, so it's like Fed skipping Basel, but they do it if they feel they have to.

He didn't skip in 2009, he lost to Federer in the final. Only year I remember him skipping was 2013.

EDIT: I was wrong, he played in 2013. I don't think he's skipped Madrid at all.

No, we're talking about Barcelona. I don't think Fed's ever played there. And I think Rafa's only loss there was to Ferrer. I'll look it up.

Ah I see. No clue about Barcelona, I generally don't like that event for some reason :)
