The Tournament
The Nuremberg Cup (Nürnberger Versicherungscup) is a professional women's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts in Nuremberg, Germany, and is a tune-up event for the French Open.
About Nürnberger (Nuremberg)
It's the second-largest city of the German federal state of Bavaria after its capital Munich, and its 511,628 (2016) inhabitants make it the 14th largest city in Germany. On the Pegnitz River (from its confluence with the Rednitz in Fürth onwards: Regnitz, a tributary of the River Main) and the Rhine–Main–Danube Canal, it lies in the Bavarian administrative region of Middle Franconia, and is the largest city and the unofficial capital of Franconia.
Nuremberg is often referred to as having been the 'unofficial capital' of the Holy Roman Empire, particularly because Imperial Diet (Reichstag) and courts met at Nuremberg Castle. The Diets of Nuremberg were an important part of the administrative structure of the empire. It was also the venue for the Nazi war crime trials following World War 2.
It also is an important center for arts and culture, as evidenced by the popular National Germanic Museum.
