In the last 25 years, the tennis shoe has exploded in creativity and diversity of different models. Each year, each footwear company produces new models, modified and enhanced from the previous years. The days of the simple and long-lasting Stan Smiths or Nike Bruins or Slazengers are long gone. You can go to a web site distributor like Tennis Warehouse and choose from literally hundreds of different tennis shoes.

Recently I’ve been wondering and asking players what their all time favorite tennis shoes are. I decided to do my own list. Here it is…

3. The Nike Air Oscillate

I loved the sleek, simple white look of the Oscillates and they must have been special because Pete Sampras seemed to wear them for over a half decade, never asking Nike to upgrade or modify, which is unusual today in that Nike is constantly changing and altering and creating new footwear models for Rafa and Roger. Fantasitc, solid shoe. I bought at least ten pairs of Oscillates.

100% AUTHENTIC BRAND NEW Nike AIR OSCILLATE QS TENNIS SHOES.. This type of sneaker is popular amongst many tennis professionals, including pro tennis players Rafael Nadal, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer. Awesome shoe packed with Nike technology so that you can own the tennis court whilst playing with these. Very comfortable and flexible. These are versatile ATHLETIC or LIFESTYLE SHOES. Great for playing tennis or casual wear.

2. Nike Zoom Breathe 2k12

Another fine shoe by Nike. Very comfortable, solid, tight, aero-dynamic feeling. Just a perfect fit and a nice design. I bought six pairs of the 2k12s overall and still have two left however the glue adhesive is failing and the outsole is cracking up and breaking and in constant need of Shoe-Goo. I guess Nike uses a weak or cheap adhesive and rubber outsole on their soles that do not last well beyond a few years.

As advanced as your game, the Nike Zoom Breathe 2k12 Men’s Tennis Shoe features unbeatable ventilation in a lightweight package without sacrificing traction, so you can beat the competition.

Synthetic upper with DragOn technology for support, durability, breathability and flexibility
Springy, ultra-lightweight LunarLite at forefoot for softy and responsive shock adsorption
Rubber outsole with herringbone pattern for superior traction with midfoot shank for extra support
Nike Zoom unit at heel for low-profile, super-responsive cushioning

And NUMBER One is the Yonex Power Cushion SHT-308 EX.

Ultra comfortable, especially in the heel area where I am vulnerable to pain after long, excessive play. These shoes seem specially made to combat that problem and they work. The “Power Cushion eases teh shock when landing – transfers shock into energy – and generates more kick – the result: Reduced muscle fatigue and more aggressive play.” …says the Yonex 308 shoe box. I love shoe and the creative design and color combos of white and blue, blue and black and red and black.

Yonex’s top of the line 308 features 3-Layer Power Cushion which absorbs shock and then reverses the impact energy for a smooth transfer to the next movement.

Double Russel Mesh is an ultra fine mesh that provides 8 times more air-exchange for releasing moisture than ordinary mesh.

Excellent high performance shoe that provides comfort, stability and durability in a shoe that will keep you on the court longer.

Specs:

Width: Medium
Length: Fits true to size
Upper: Synthetic Leather / Double Russel Mesh
Insole : Power Cushion insole
Midsole: Toughbrid
Outsole: Non-marking endurance rubber

Honorable Mentions: Adidas Barricade 3 and 4; Wilson Crossfire, Nike Court Ballistec 2.3 (lime green).

My favorite tennis shoe of all time was the Nike Air Court Motion International from 2001, followed closely by this grey Asics shoe (that Thomas Enqvist and Alex Corretja used to wear) that featured a covering wrap over the laces, secured by a lock on the outer side of the shoe; I don't remember the name. Third place would be the Asics Gel Game 4 (the Gel Game 5 developed such a bad reputation that I skipped it in favor of the Gel Solution Slam 2). Not sure what my next shoe will be; I might stick with Asics, or go to Mizuno or Lotto -- I have tried out New Balance in the past, but their D (regular) width, while true to technical measurements, is a bit too wide for me, while practically all the Nikes since the Air Court Motion International are much more narrow than their proported D size (possibly a C or CC size?), and thus pinch my feet.

Thomas. I remember those Air Court Motions! Hewitt Rios and Rafa used them. In fact I had a pair of actual Rafa worn ACMs that I bought from the guy who got them as a gift from Rafa after the 2003 US Open. But I ended up wearing them out. Those were good shoes. Very unique styling with the orange zig zag. They were not the most durable or comfortable shoes for hard use but they were nice looking. I wouldnt be shocked if those shoes were a factor in Hewitt's foot issues. Why did you like those Asics silver shoes? I actually have a pair left in size 11 in good condition, also bought from the US Open locker room source, so they could actually be Enqvist or Corretjas. I rate Mizuno very highly, never tried Lotto though I hear good things. I had one pair of Asics and they were poor. They had very poor traction on the hard courts I was playing on and they were breaking at the seams.

Scoop, I liked those Asics silver shoes because the top covering made them very useful for more than just tennis (casual strolls, bad/rainy/snowy weather, even hiking). I think Enqvist actually cut out the covering, though. I first tried out the Asics tennis shoes back in the late 1990s (when Holabird Sports was the only one that carried 'em) and yes, they were terrible -- absolutely terrible. I was firmly in the Nike camp (save for occasional forays into K-Swiss, Head, and Adidas -- was even going to try out the Prince QuikTrac Ti shoes at one point, but never did) until that Asics silver shoe came out. I tried them, liked 'em, and haven't really looked back since. I have heard really good things about the specific Lotto shoe model that David Ferrer/Denis Istomin wear, so I may buy those in the future. Mizuno is also under consideration.

Asics definitely was original with those silver Asics, that was one of the most innovative tennis shoes of the decade. Could see Asics trying that again. But then maybe not if they were poor sellers. Gimmicks seldom work with tennis shoes unless Fed or Rafa endorse the idea. Those Prince Quick Tracs were good shoes, very soft and comfy but they wore out "Quick." :)

Played so many opponents with the Nike hot lava black and orange shoes in 1990-91. Then neon yellow blue (which to me weren't as nice). Some players even had the shoes plus the matching Donnay racquets!!!
