Murray splits with Mauresmo

Andy Murray has split with coach Amelie Mauresmo.

Murray confirmed reports today.

“I’ve learned a lot from Amélie over the past two years. She’s been a calming influence in the team and we’ll miss having her around. I’ll take some time to consider the next steps and how we progress from here, but I’d like to thank her for everything she has done, she’s been an invaluable member of the team.”



Mauresmo added: “Working with Andy over the last two years has been a fantastic experience for me. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being part of the great team of people he has around him. Dedicating enough time along with the travel has been a challenge for me. I wish him and the team well and I hope he goes on to win any more titles.”

A bit harsh if she was fired in my opinion. He does a lot of things better than he used to. He's coming up short against Novak and Federer, which is the way it should be. They are better players than him and all the coaching in the world is never going to change that. When Lendl was coaching him, Novak was no where near the monster he's become now. I'm not sure what she could have done. Frankly his two slam wins under Lendl (and I know this is controversial but I've said it before) were more to do with Novak not being able to handle the wind in the first 2 sets at Flushing and Novak just not turning up in the Wimbledon final. That was the old flaky Novak who couldn't handle playing against a heavy fan favourite. He's certainly corrected that problem now, going by his performance levels against Roger at both Flushing and Wimbledon. I just don't see what any coach can do for him, he's at his correct level imho

And yeah I think it was time to move on for both of them I guess. Murray has been very positive about Mauresmo as a coach btw. Also think she was good for him on the mental side of things. Murray has grown on me since Mauresmo became coach.

he does a lot of 'things' better than he used to? what things? with (or without) all due respect, your posts are almost always silly. You are the only person who's talked like that about Lendl's positive effect while trying to pump up Mauresmo's impact with nothing to show for.

I'll simplify this for you, before Lendl he was a coward; all of Nadal/Novak/Fed handled him. During Lendl, he got 2 slams and an Olympic; beating Novak and Fed in those big finals. After Lendl (during Mauresmo) he's back to being a coward. All else being equal, Lendl made him play with balls. With Mauresmo, he has no balls....she has none herself!

Lendl is 1000 times the coach that Mauresmo is, get over it.

Very interesting article. Thanks, @Federberg. Some insights into the coaching of Murray. If nothing else, we see what we all believe: that coaching match-ups come down to some intangibles, like temperamental chemistry. Surely that has nothing to do with gender. Ricardo's hair just goes on fire when you mention women in the context of men's sports.

I cant see why murray can't entice lendl with maybe 12wks per year ?..3weeks around each major..or even less,

surely murray doesn't need a coach for 22plus weeks a year. but maybe the little diddums needs someone more fulltime, even tho he's 29.

Or perhaps he could just place a cardboard cut-out of Lendl in the box. It's not like he ever changed expression. And he was really just there to prevent Andy from yelling at the box, i.e., whinging.

Anyone wonder about the effects of putting your children out on the tennis courts at a young age? When you realize Murray grew up on the tennis courts, processing the tensions at home, the trauma from the tragedy at his school, it's little wonder he seems unhinged out there. I doubt a coach will fix that.

I think the Lendl thing worked well because he was a tough taskmaster - not in a sergeant-major fashion, but in a "achieving goals" fashion and not a guy who would stroke Andy's ego. Of course, for that to work, it helps that you've been there and done it. I think Andy respected the fact that Lendl had done it the hard way and achieved more in the game than himself. I'm not sure who would be a good fit for Andy other than Lendl. Most of the other ex-top pros like Agassi, Sampras etc don't seem too interested in coaching and/or maybe don't have the mindset for it...

Lendl was perfect for Murray, and it's a shame that he bailed. I don't think McEnroe is interested in coaching, but perhaps a bit of consulting on channeling negative energy into positive results? No one was better at it.
