Does this smack of desperation or is it a sensible move to try and close the gap to Novak?

Personally not sure that re-igniting any past relationship actually works - Its driven on nostalgia and the dynamic of the relationship will never be the same as before simply because there was a before.

Here's an article from March of 2014 with an interesting comment:

in the days before the Australian Open in January, Murray compared the relationship(with Lendl) to a love affair that had lost its first flush of excitement. “I would try to impress my girlfriend a lot more the first few months I was with her than I do now,” he said. “It’s the same with Ivan.”

I think in hindsight Murray realizes that is the best he ever played. Whether they find the magic again is a good question. Back in the day, Djokovic looked intimidated by a Lendl coached Murray. I doubt that will be an issue now. He and Boris have been together going into their third year and winning everything.

Quite a candid appraisal.

I agree that there is likely very little Andy could do to throw Novak off - perhaps Ivan could physically attack Boris to the point that there are noticeable facial wounds, then he would plant himself in Novak's box complete with stony faced demeanour as he made overt 'fists' rubbing his knuckles. At this stage though its all about whether he can help Murray to play the big moments better nothing more I think.
