Just read on twitter that Andy has withdrawn from the Asia tournaments and is doubtful for the WTF. He's having surgery on his back. Don't know anything more yet. Gutted and worried. :(

Will do Moxie. On my mobile right now with a low battery. Will check for more info when I get home.

The tour needs Nadal and Murray more than any 2 players. When these 2 meet, they produce the highest quality tennis of any 2 players in the world. Nadal is back, Murray is out, tragically.

Surprising and discouraging. I guess that makes David Ferrer the world #3 pretty soon and Berdych will rise to #4. How about that?

Man this really sucks. I like Andy a lot, that's a tough setback. I really hope the surgery is a preventive measure, a safe option to avoid the danger of further damage and not a career threatening setback like it was for Del Potro who needed years to get back on track and is still not quite the player he was before. In any case Andy is well-advised to take as much time off as needed. If that means he has to cancel the entire Indoor season, then so be it. Nadal's layoff should serve as a fitting example.

They claim it's only minor and a good deal of laser back surgery can be minor these days so hopefully he has a swift recovery. He may still play the WTF. Hope so. Seeing as it's been bothering him for a while now I guess it was something they decided was necessary. Murray's frame is pretty sturdy these days so that should aid his recovery. A guy I know fell off a horse and the doctors told him the only thing keeping him from breaking his back was having so much muscle. In that respect being physically strong should definitely help Andy recover better. He'll be fine and hopefully back sooner than people think.

Andy Murray: Back surgery set to end Wimbledon champion's year

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/24163790

Andy Murray will undergo surgery on a long-standing back injury on Monday and is unlikely to play again this season.

The 26-year-old has a disc problem in his lower back and is set to miss this year's remaining tour events, including November's World Tour Finals in London.

The injury flared up in May, forcing him to withdraw from the French Open.

He returned to become first British man to win the Wimbledon singles since 1936 but struggled on the hard courts and lost in the US Open quarter-final.

The disc problem, which Murray has suffered for two years, affects a nerve in his lower back which can send pain shooting down his hip and upper leg.

It appears to cause him more problems when he plays on clay and the harder surfaces than on grass courts.

He had pain-killing injections before the 2012 French Open and withdrew from this year's Rome Masters midway through a match against Marcel Granollers. After consulting medical advice, he decided he would not be fit for Roland Garros.

There were signs of discomfort at the US Open, but he only took the decision to have surgery after last weekend's Davis Cup tie on clay in Croatia. He admitted his back was sore after last Friday's opening singles victory over Borna Coric.

Murray had been scheduled to play three more events in Asia this season, including the Shanghai Masters, then the Paris Masters before heading to the World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena from 4-11 November.

There is no suggestion that next year's schedule will be affected and it is hoped he will kick off his regular pre-season training block in Miami in the middle of November.

A shame he'll miss the WTF in particular. Would've liked to finally see him against Nadal again and on indoor hards would've been nice. I'm sure he'll feel better after the surgery and hopefully be able to train 100% from mid November and be a serious contender at the AO.

Sorry to hear the news. I was hoping to see a Murray-Nadal match soon.
I believe Grand Slam Winner Murray has not yet played against Nadal. Everybody
was wanting to see how he matches up against Nadal after proving his mojo.

Thanks so much for all the nice messages today. Having operation on Monday. Will let everyone know how it goes. I'll be "back" stronger. Andy Murray

Berdych was the first player to send a message.
"I hope all will be fine and recover and get back soon!! take care andy.

Not sure how many twitter fans are on here but Berdych has been a twitter sensation. He seems like a very sweet, funny guy. Who knew?

It's a temporary setback, but if it helps him longterm, then it will have been worth it. Sounds like he has been in quite a bit of pain, so this should help.

Thank you, Iona, for keeping us informed. :)

Berdych has always smiled more than any player in the world, so it was fairly predictable that he'd be liked on twitter.

What?! You do know who Berdych is, right? I'm having a hard time remembering him ever smiling, nevertheless "always" and "more than any player in the world."

Poor Andy. he's especially unlucky with his back. he already pulled out RG because of it and now he could miss Masters
Wish him a fast recovery
