Not a tennis story, but this guy transcended all sports... a huge icon - maybe the biggest sporting icon of all time.

Rest in Peace.

Incredibly sad. Ali was well before my time but everyone knew how great this man was as a fighter and as a person. As you said he transcended all of sports, not just boxing. RIP champ

He was the forerunner of all the trash talk we have to put up with in sport. I wish he would have let his fists do all the talking.

^ I'd say they did a LOT of the talking. Boxing, UFC, football, even basketball would be weird without a lot of trash talking. Those are not meant to be a gentleman's sport like tennis.

a sad day but I feel he's better off out of it. he was a prisoner in his own body..for someone at the peak of human fitness in his prime that must have been a mental nightmare.

talking of prime, I was unfortunate enough to watch his holmes fight on tv on October 2nd 1980..a lesson in going on too long, and that was nott even his final fight.

If you want a GOAT, it was Ali...he'd tell you so himself. Greatest boxer, but also activist, "poet," and wholly transformative giant of the 20th Century.
