Defending Citi Open champion Gael Monfils participated in the Citi Professional Development Day today, speaking about his life taking questions from local kids.

Gael revealed some interesting tidbits…

He started playing at two and his first coach was dad who played pro soccer.

He said “one regret is I didnt see my brother grow up because I was away.”

After tennis occupation? ‘Watchmaker. I love watches.”

Diet: “Not very good. I have a bunch of people who remind me. I try to eat vegetables pasta rice before a big match. When they tell me to eat rice I do it.”

Career achievements: “Very proud, very happy I made it to the top. My parents remind me I have to be proud. I want to be a champion. Im not yet a champion. To be a champion you have to win a Grand Slam. Im finished with the first half of my career. Im hoping the second half will bring me to be a champion.”

Monfils will play his first match against Yuki Bhambri tomorrow.

He won't win any slams, or any big tournaments for that matter, by tanking matches and playing like an idiot with no plan b. An aggressive shot maker at heart who chooses to play as one of the tours biggest pushers. Total waste and baffling strategies.

Do you really think he's an aggressive shot maker at heart? I think he's a pusher at heart, with the tools to be a devastatingly aggressive shot maker. I don't know anyone else on tour who can generate heat off both wings like he can

He definitely used to be way more aggressive a good few years ago but these days he's a puke making pusher 90% of the time and throws in the occasional ripped down the line forehand winner and fast ace here and there. Even his serves he chooses to hit way too slow most of the time 'cos he can rip those too when he actually bothers. He could be so much better than he is if he played differently imo.

Agreed. Gael is a pusher at heart and it's a pity because he had the talent to do more.
