In general, I don't like football as much as basketball and tennis, but there are times when I love it. Watching Michael Vick in the zone is one of those moments.

He is much maligned in the media for "turning the ball over" and "making poor decisions"; Dan Graziano of ESPN is the main culprit here. Implicitly, everyone is always questioning his intelligence, saying that he can't run an offense the way that the system-robot quarterbacks can. The truth is, Vick is a very HIGH IQ player and his improvisational ability is absolutely brilliant. Only Roethlisberger really competes with him in that respect if you ask me.

What has really hurt Vick in his career is never having a #1 receiver (his receivers in Philadelphia are too small for the system Andy Reid tried to run) and also play-calling that was too slow, too conservative, too timid, and too conventional to suit his dynamic nature.

Enjoy these awesome highlights, first from the Monday Night Redskins game and then from his Virginia Tech days. The very high intelligence of these plays is exceptional. Anyone who says he isn't a smart player is himself stupid:

Right on cue with this post, Michael Vick has been marvelous playing in Chip Kelly's fast-paced offense. It suits him very well.

What a remarkable talent Vick is. He just needed to play in a system that jibed with his natural tempo, and now he has it.

That kick-ass player! Those who call him stupid need to take some time and think. Maybe they don't understand something!

I forgot to post immediately after the Jets-Steelers game, but a couple of the throws Vick had were just A+ level, especially his first touchdown. Perfectly tight spiral and perfectly timed throw to a receiver in stride.

The worst insults directed at him are about his ability to read defenses, which really isn't a problem. He just has never had a #1 receiver to work with and he has consistently gotten poor input from coaches (the completely off-base assessment of Dan Graziano aside). If Vick is playing at the right pace and has the right weapons, I take him over Brady and Manning any day. He can throw out of the pocket just as well while also being dynamic with his feet. And I find it very bothersome when the young mobile quarterbacks like Kaepernick, Cam Newton, and RG III are compared to Vick. None of them is in his league of overall ability and talent.
