Why are Indian Wells and Miami longer tournaments while all the others (I think) are 7-8 days? What is the reason for this? Are there not rules governing the length of a Masters tournament?

IW and M have draw size of 96. The other masters have draw size of 56 and Paris is even smaller with a draw size of 48. Hence, Miami and IW are about 10 days longer.

Thanks for the info GSM. So I guess the individual tournaments set the draw size.

You mean 10 days, not 10 days longer. Miami and IW have one extra round, so they're 2 days longer.

Nitpicking for the sake of clarity.

They're also co-ed tournaments, so they have to accommodate men's and women's matches in the schedule.

But, so are Madrid, Rome and Cincy. So, that is not the reason.

Good point. I guess the answer is just the bigger field, then.

I quite like the IW/Miami schedules. They feel a bit more like the big tournaments they are rather than being reduced to warm ups for the slams like the clay Masters events and Canada/Cincinnati.

It's a nice bit of spectacle to spice up the long gap between Australia and Garros.

They were "more" huge when best of 5! With how withering matches are these days, I don't blame them for "pulling back" and going with best of 3 though! I well remember Edberg going 4 hours and 4 long TB sets to beat out Agassi on a windy day at '90 IW! The Lipton was supposed to be the 5th major with addition of MxD at it's inception in '85! Martina won all 3 events that year! :popcorn :dodgy:
