Can anyone confirm a rumour I heard that Maria Kirilenko is out of the Australian Open and is considering leaving tennis, due to her ongoing injury problems. Surfaced this afternoon from a couple of sources, but nothing on the WTA site, which can be slow to get the latest news out. Of course MK is special to many of us, and I have had the pleasure of taken photos of her and interviewing her.
Just can't substantiate this story yet.

Sherona, if Pova does not win a slam this year, do you promise to stop the domination talk? Pova has never dominated, and she never will. She is a great player, admired for her fight by tennis fans and for her looks by non-tennis fans. I assume you fall head long into the latter group. For your edification, let me say that Kirikenko is actually the more skilled player. She just cannot generate the power that Pova does because of size. Incidentally, many would argue that Kirikenko is prettier.

Kirilenko is infinitely prettier and also comes across as a far nicer person.

Is MK still with IA? IA retired and may be she wants to follow in his footsteps.

I cannot forget one match in which MK defeated MS; In that match on every second
serve of MS, MK returned it from 3 yards inside the baseline.

MK is with hockey star Alex Ovechkin and they are engaged to be married, Game Set. I remember a match in the Australian Open that MK beat MS, in stunning fashion.

Re: Maria Kirilenko is the better tennis player - more beautiful and comes across as nicer

Maria Sharapova is the most merited WTA player today except for the sisters Williams - She's won a career grand slam which only a handful of champions has managed to do in the so called open era plus 28 titles - I would call that domination even if Serena Williams has dominated even more

As for a comparison between Maria Kirilenko och Maria Sharapova's beauty - All of you who think that Maria Kirilenko is more attractive - Good for you!! - It's all about your personal taste - It however seems to me that Big Business has chosen and favored Masha year after year and believe you me - those who're head of these companies advertisement departments are clever guys who know how to pick a winner - Also Masha is widely more popular among common people - tennis fans or other wise - No one of the current WTA players even come close to Masha's 11 million "likes" - These are hard facts and it shows that those who're dismissing Masha time after time belong to a small minority who have their own dark reasons to dismiss Masha every chance they get

I like Maria Kirilenko a lot but I wanna point out that Masha in fact overshadows Maria Kirilenko tennis wise (Their H2H 5-2 in Masha's favor) - business wise and popularity wise something which seems difficult for some to accept

Who of the 2 come across as "nicer" - well - Masha has on several occasions explained why she doesn't "mingle" with the other WTA players - She's not like Ms. Sunshine or Kim Clijsters and she's explained that it is a deliberate choice - I'm sure most of her peers at least respect her - When Kim Clisters retired - she hugged Masha very emotionally - Never during her career has Masha been involved in a scandal - neither on or of court - She's always polite on her press conferences even after a humiliating loss - She's also mostly gracious and credits her opponents - either she's won or lost - To me that makes Masha - among a whole lot of other reasons - very likable

As they say - Beauty is in the beholder's eyes

I will say that your comments on Masha are very well stated. Very concise and to the point. Your Maria has excelled at her game I cannot argue that. She does not treat fools with kindness, I have seen that, a reporter from "down under" irritated her one time and she promptly put him in his place. It was to do with her Pova candy. She is respectful in most instances, yet I find her just a bit aloof. Again, nothing really wrong there either, just my opinion and reporters can have those. I have never had the opportunity yet to sit in on a Maria interview, perhaps if I do get that chance, it will further enhance my feelings for her.

I read on Maria Kirilenko's face book page she won't be defending her title in Pattaya which now starts January 27th.
I read the reason she pulled out of the AO was due to a ankle injury.I haven't heard any news that she will retire.I hope not.

Since Maria's ankle injury announcment, Alex has been on a tear, he joined the 400 goal club last night.

I am assuming Maria has been mending more than her ankle!

I would love to see her take her time, make sure her ankle is 100% and then she can come back for the February or March swing .

OV is certainly on a tear, without him the Capitals would be in dire straits, leading the NHL in goals. As for Maria's medical qualifications, I am sure she is "nursing" all of Alex's minor injuries! I would agree Kiu, Maria needs to take plenty of time to recover, if she expects to compete at the level we are accused to see her play. My only worry is that with her left knee trouble over the years is there are possibility she may say that with this other injury is it worth the effort?

Seeing as they're both Russian (even if Sharapova is totally American at this point) it annoys the hell out of me seeing people refer to one Maria as Masha and the other as Maria. They're both known as Masha for crying out loud as are most Russian girls called Maria. Bloody hell.

Incidentally practically no one out there pronounce's Sharapova's surname correctly. I've never once heard a commentator (besides in Russian speaking countries) or person in real life say it correctly. Just something to note.

It's Sha rap of ah

Not Shara poh vah

Although you are right that "Masha" is a sorta nickname for "Maria" it has more or less become an official nickname for Maria Sharapova - If you listen to Russian TV commentators when they review a Maria Sharapova match - they usually refer to her as "Masha" but they never do when they're commenting Maria Kirilenko matches ;)

Cheers Happy Christmas and New Year year to you too. I've heard commentators call Kirilenko Masha too :) Poor Safina. Shame about her back problems. She was a headcase but at least another player capable of beating top players now and then.

If they call both of them as Masha it would lead to confusion and perhaps that is the
reason they are not doing so.
