Man arrested after alleged threats against Wimbledon champion Kvitova

PRAGUE -- Czech police say they have arrested a man who allegedly made threats against Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

Police spokeswoman Gabriela Holcakova said Friday that a 23-year-old Czech made the threats against "a publicly known person" in a phone call to an unspecified other person on Thursday. Holcakova would not confirm Czech media reports that the targeted person was Kvitova.

Kvitova's spokesman Karel Tejkal said nobody

had threatened the tennis player directly, but added: "Police did a great job."

Holcakova said the man, who was not identified, was arrested as police considered the threats serious.

The incident follows criticism of Kvitova, including from a member of parliament, for moving from the Czech Republic to Monaco to avoid higher taxation.

Kvitova beat Canada's Eugenie Bouchard on Saturday for her second Wimbledon title.

Kvitova criticized by politician for moving to Monaco

Saturday, July 12, 2014 /by Kamakshi Tandon

Petra Kivitova has been criticized by a Czech politician for relocating from the Czech Republic to Monaco.

Kvitova moved to the tax-free principality about 10 months ago, joining compatriots like Tomas Berdych and Lucie Safarova.

''I think that we should all have a long and hard think about the fact that if someone leaves the Czech Republic and becomes a member of another state, then they should lose their Czech citizenship,'' said Social Democrat MP Stanislav Huml.

Do these politicos have no shame. He tries to make it about patriotism

when the only only thought in his mind is not getting a cut of that $3 mil

and her future earnings.

It's all about the money. Why work your tale off to be successful and then

have to give it all to some politicians to put in their pockets. How many practice

sessions did those politicos help at. Hell, how many matches did they attend

And bought a ticket for. ( They are not used to paying for anything ) How many

times were they there to console her after a tough loss. And he has the nerve

to criticize her for moving to Monaco.

If he is worried about her citizenship, patriotism and her country

let him do his job and lower taxes and she, Lucie and Birdman would not

have had to move.

This is serious, and worrying, as we remember what happened to Monica Seles. Hopefully, if there was a crazy out there, he's been thwarted.

However, you have put two issues on the table. I'll address the other one in my next post.

RJD, you make a lot of assumptions about corruption in Czech politics, as I bolded above. Maybe you are expert in this, so I shouldn't make assumptions, either; I'll be interested to hear what you have to say. And I don't know about the Czech Republic's tennis federation, and how much they supported Kvitova as she was coming up. But there is an argument to be made that, if a player chooses not to pay taxes in her/his home country, then perhaps they shouldn't represent them, either.

You say it's about money, and it is. Taxes are money. But taxes are also paying your share into the common good in your country. Surely, Kvitova works hard for her money, but don't other Czech citizens? Only she has more of it, and has the luxury of tax-sheltering in Monaco. Why would her money be more hard fought-for than anyone else who works in her native country? Plus, she has loads of it, as opposed to those that feel the real pinch of taxes. She has the option of staying in her country, and starting a foundation. It doesn't protect all of her earnings, but it gives her some power over where it goes.

Eh you also make a lot of assumptions. I assume that in a situation like that Kvitova doesn't have a lot of time to be considering decisions about taxes and money management. These people have big management teams making those decisions for them.
