There were no real surprises in Sunday’s edition of the women’s Olympic tennis programme. Serena Williams swept into the second round with a comfortable win over Australia’s Daria Gavrilova 6-4 6-2. She took a while to come to terms with the blustery conditions and let the officials know her thoughts. Courts 1 and 2 had already had play suspended but Williams concerns were dismissed and play continued on the Centre Court.

Spain’s Garbine Muguruza and German Angelique Kerber both won convincingly to join Williams in the Round of 32. Muguruza recovered quickly from an early break to defeat Andreea Mitu of Romania 6-2, 6-2 and Kerber took out Mariana Duque-Marino 6-3 7-5.

After Saturday’s shock exits of Agnieszka Radwanska and Venus Williams, Sam Stosur looked like she might be joining them for a time before recovering from a set down to overcome Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko 1-6 6-3 6-2. It was Stosur’s first meeting against her opponent.

“I didn’t know much about her and I was feeling things out a bit at first,” she said.

“She wasn’t missing a beat. I didn’t think I was playing that badly but there wasn’t much I could do.”

Caroline Wozniacki’s return from injury went according to plan. The Dane, a former world number defeated Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic 6-2 6-2.
