Australia is in bad shape if Kyrgios, with a 10-9 ATP Tour record, is the player of the year.

Yes, I know the US is pitiful, too, but I noticed this headline on the ATP site, and couldn't help but think of Australia's storied history, and how it has come to this.

Another interpretation: there are too many awards.

It is easy to hype a player after a good result, then they have high expectations and put the player under such a pressure, he might bit be able to handle in the end.
Just remember, Tomic had a similar deep run (QF also at Wimbledon) and not at 19 like Kyrgios, even earlier at 18y.
Bernie got as high as 27 by 19, so Nick is so far performing under Bernie's at the same age, and then t all kind of issues ( off court, coaching and injury) derailed his further development.
They really should scale down and wait for confirmation over time, and not just be as enthusiastic after a flash in a pan.

Well put, Herios.

Well, Bernie has a dad. Hopefully, Kyrgios does not have one.

crikey, that's just plain wrong on too many levels. for one, if you name an award after a former number 1 who's won 26 grand slam titles and took your nation to 4 Davis Cup wins, you don't hand it out to a guy like Kyrgios. not sure if it does his attitude and future ambitions any good either.

and finally, he's not even the top ranked Aussie this year - that distinction would go to Hewitt! and i'm no fan of Rusty's, but he actually won two tourneys in 2014, whereas Kyrgios hasn't even been to a final in his entire pro career...

Let's hope it serves as encouragement for him but yeah, there's too many awards. If the man who the award is named after is actually still alive, then it's premature on all counts...

This is you buddy, who were upset with him that he called it a season too early

I am actually happy to see he thinks maturely. Many talented players (Del Potro, Nishikori) have lesser of a career than they could have due to injuries. Or do I need you to remind about Ralphie, who is now known to be more like a part time player?

Yeah, it's a little exaggerative, but us Australians tend to get over-excited when someone other than Lleyton Hewitt does well. :p

Still, Kyrgios' Wimbledon run alone was just awesome, especially when he beat Nadal. And I know he is just not the type to pull a Nard Dog and barely put in any effort. This guy has heart!

I'm really looking forward to his year in 2015. I wonder how he'll deal with the pressure at the AO? The media is going to be all over him, but he doesn't seem to mind it, overall. In fact, he seems to thrive off it.

I totally disagree that the Newcombe Medal went to Nick Kyrgios,I really think it was based on the media hype surrounding Nick's win over Nadal at Wimbledon.

To me Casey Dellacqua was more of a deserving winner.Casey won more tour and grand slam matches than any other Australian tennis player in 2014.
Not only did Casey win more Grand Slam matches than any other Australian, she had a 31-18 win-loss record for the year and reached a career high ranking of No 26 after starting 2014 ranked No 130.

Nick won 10 matches on tour and had a highest ranking of No 52.If we are talking about consistency at the highest level over the whole year to me Casey would have been a deserving winner.

Rafa's third early loss in a row there, too, so it wasn't a unique accomplishment, either. And even if it had been -- a la Soderling at RG -- a player doesn't deserve a medal for winning a R16 match, then promptly losing in the next round.

I recently heard someone claim the worst thing a boss can tell an employee is "Good job!" While I think that's too extreme, there's some truth to it. Tell Nick he did a good job when he wins Wimbledon, not when he loses in the quarterfinal.

I have a concern regarding Kyrgios, as far as his fitness. He has had 2 injuries this year while 18-19, one at his elbow in spring and now another one at his forearm. Too much as far as I am concerned for such a young player.

One should always be concerned about tall players to begin with. Tennis is rarely kind to them, injury wise. After 6.3, 6.4, life gets difficult for a tennis player I think. Seen many examples of it.

Casey Dellacqua's agent feels the same. Makes a convincing argument, too...

EDIT: Cue Nick's bro on Twitter again, railing against "h8ers..." :cover

I wish Nick's brother never found Twitter,it isn't the first time he has come out against the 'haters'... this is embarrassing for Nick who dosent share his sentiments.
