RE: Kremlin Cup (Women's Premier)

Chaos around the tournaments right now. Some rumours tell that Luxembourg is not counting. Some says Kerber is in and then they don't - now there is a message from WTA on their Twitter (1 h ago)

.@AngeliqueKerber has withdrawn from @KremlinCup_ru due to a non-acute back injury. #WTA

never seen that excuse before. The fact is that T. Bacsinszky can gain 279 points if she wins Luxembourg and that means a lot to the race:

6 Angelique Kerber 27.7 GER 3400 - has withdrawn from Moscow
7 Lucie Safarova 28.7 CZE 3221 - Moscow R16 - 3690
8 Flavia Pennetta 33.6 ITA 3153 - Moscow R16 - 3622
9 Timea Bacsinszky 26.3 SUI 3133 - Luxembourg R32 - 3412

So Kerber is NOT secure in Singapore.

That was a tough match for Safarova. She's been out for a while and Pavlyuchenkova has been well lately. Not so surprised to see the upset.

Good grief. Pliskova, Schmiedlova, Mladenovic, Safarova all out. And now Mrs. Fognini-to-be drops out of the QF match.

Kuznetsova, your table is ready.

She's always been one of my personal favorites, so that would be great. She'll be extra motivated, too, in front of the home crowd.

Same here. I can't put my finger on it, but I've always rooted for her. There's something about here that....disarms me. lol

Quarterfinal Results:

L Tsurenko (UKR) bt (3) F Pennetta (ITA) Walkover
D Kasatkina (RUS) bt (5) C Suarez-Navarro (SPA) 6-1, 6-2
S Kuznetsova (RUS) bt A Sevastova (LAT) 5-7, 6-1, 6-3
A Pavlyuchenkova (RUS) bt M Gasparyan (RUS)6-1, 6-3

Can't remember a women's tournament more decimated by withdrawals, drop outs, retirements, walkovers and upsets than this tournament. Still, Kuznetsova loves this tournament and is playing well. Pavlyuchenkova just won a tourney last week and is hot. They could meet for a very interesting final.

Semifinals:
Tsurenkova vs. Kuznetsova
Kasatkina vs. Pavlyuchenkova

Friday's Results!

Semifinals
A Pavlyuchenkova (RUS) bt D Kasatkina (RUS) 2-6, 6-2, 6-4
S Kuznetsova (RUS) bt L Tsurenko (UKR) 6-2, 6-4

So the finals are set! After all the withdrawals, dropouts, retirements and upsets, we have two unseeded Russians in the final. Defending champion and Twitter headache Pavlyuchenkova goes up against veteran Kuznetsova for the title!

To wrap up, this Kremlin Cup had dropouts, withdrawals, walkovers and anything else you could imagine to wipe out the top ladies. When all was said and done, it was Svetlana Kuznetsova, who I was surprised to see had never won this title, and Twitter's Enemy No. 1 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who hadn't lost indoors in like over a year or something. She was just coming off a title from last week as well. But boy howdy Kuzzy socked it to Pavly and won easily 2 and 1. Just when you think Kuznetsova is finally fading, she makes a statement to show she's still around. Just like Jelena Jankovic. This was Kuznetsova's 15th career title, including her 2004 USO and 2009 French Open Slams.
