Just curious, but what do people do for exercise etc? I am not particularly regimented, but I do pushups and some core exercises everyday, and then do a variety of other things according to my whims including yoga, running, and cycling (I went on a 20 mile ride today!). I am not in that great shape (and am not being falsely modest), just curious what other people like to do. I can't do exercise that I don't enjoy, so I am always struggling to find things that I enjoy.

I also play tennis when I have someone to play with, haha. Although, my love of tennis far exceeds my ability at it.

I try to play tennis three times a week. Usually do a morning and evening hike into the hills on the days that I don't. Ride the Schwinn Aerodyne in bad weather. And swim - laps. :)

My son is trying to get me to do P90X. He's been doing it for 2 years and it's helped him in every other facet of his sporting life - mountain biking, tennis, soccer. Unfortunately I can't do exercise I don't enjoy either; so am hesitant to get started.

I find it very difficult to do anything when there is no ball involved...I get bored too quickly, so it is tennis, basketball , squash and soccer. I probably only go to the gym if there is a problem area. I do enjoy swimming but again, i get bored so right now I am looking for a sound system where I can listen to music while swimming, to pump me up a bit.

How about some mind activities when you get bored? Learn something, gain knowledge etc.?

Exercise helps clear the mind for other things. Also, if you spend a lot of time sitting at a desk, you need to find physical activities to keep your self feeling good.

I don't like about running, I just get out of breath so easily. I felt two kilometers was my maximum to run about 7 years ago when I ran the Cooper test. Since then I've lost 20 kilos of overweight, so I guess I could do better now but I still don't like about running.

But I like swimming a lot. It has a slower tempo than running so I feel it's easier. My usual (yet irregular) workout is to go to a swimming hall for an hour. I swim for 50mins (about 2km) and then spend the last 10mins in water massage. Now I've done that two or three times in a week in this month but sometimes I may not do any workout in a month.

That's for another thread Emma ;) This one is regarding physical well-being.:p

But I thought you were getting enough physical activities as it is?

And where is that mind activity thread?

But I never said one shouldn't exorcize so I don't understand this comment. I thought Murat was already getting enough exercise and was still getting bored (lol). That was my understanding of his post anyway.

Hey Emma, my point was that I find the physical activities that do not involve an opponent bore me...like running alone or swimming and such, that's all...

Why don't YOU start the mind activities thread? I would definitely contribute there too since I am very interested in workings of the mind.:)

I didn't realize you were responding specifically to Murat. I thought you were talking about the thread generally. No worries, Emma.

Ah, I see. How about imaginary opponents? :p

I like both running and swimming a great deal. You can run with someone but I don't see how you can have a partner in swimming. Know this, at the very fundamental level, we are all one and only so having these partners are just some delusional (and yet logical) state of mind that we've created for ourselves (that's your upcoming mind activities preview :p), so that we can experience actualities and of course, don't feel too lonely out there.

I can start a mind activities thread for sure. My problem is I might get too involved. I am quite naughty and yet, very predictable that way. :)

Thank you. I was very worried, yes. :p

August,20 kilos is serious weight lost. Congrats. Any secrets there?

I got the motivation once when I thought about applying to get to the airline pilot training. The national aviation school, which is much cheaper than private ones, requires to have not much overweight. (So that the future pilots won't retire before their 50s because of bad health.)

That way I got the motivation even though right now I don't think about the pilot's job, I'm happy with what I study now.

And how I did it. I increased my training and controlled eating. But it wasn't too fast, it took four years from me.

if we're talking numbers - i'm currently 30kg from my all-time high ;) although i'm actually keeping an eye on those numbers and trying not to go to low, maybe add a couple back on.

it feels odd, but it's really not that easy to keep the weight on, since what's keeping me in shape currently is - as moxie knows - training for my first marathon, which will be the Marine Corps in washington, end of october. had my first 20 mile run this past weekend, it went good enough.

still a bit bizarre to me. i wasn't obese, but very heavy all through high school. and very much not in shape. last year of school, i quit after 20 minutes in our PE class attempt to do 10k (i'd not even finished the 8k the year before). today, i got up at 6 to have a 8mile/13k easy run.

and yeah, just like with August, the recipe is pretty simple - eat less and better, and train more. the first 20kg went rather fast though. the thing was, a thyroid problem had basically kept me from losing weight before... it didn't make me bigger, but lower hormone levels make it harder for your body to burn fat, shed weight etc. which didn't exactly help my motivation. i got meds to fix that by the end of high school, but wasn't too aware of the weight issue that came with it, and went on like before, and didn't lose any weight at first - until i decided to go a little lighter food-wise for lent, switching meat sandwiches with fruit and softdrinks with water. and then, for the first time in my life, i actually LOST weight. needless to say, this was rather motivating, so i kept up the stricter diet, exercised modestly and lost about 20kg in maybe half a year, and another 5 in the following six months.

really getting in shape was another step though. a year later (by then, the thyroid had recovered and i could drop the meds), i started upping the exercise slowly - mostly running, but that also helped make other sports, tennis (which i suck at and never really got to learn, tbh), basketball (better) more intense. i put some of the weight back on, but differently. mind you, i'm still no calvin klein underwear model, and i'll probably never really get rid of the little belly, the reminder of where i was ;) don't mind that, though (and it doesn't show in shirts, let alone suits ;) ).

thing is, i feel - and throughout the process always felt - good about how much i ate. never really starved myself. one part. i think that this really might be my "natural" self, a rather slim body type. these days, as i said, if i just go by what the body asks for, i'll be more likely to lose weight, and when i try to build some muscle, it's comparatively hard.

right now, my workout calendar is strongly dominated by the running. usually, i also do some (mountain and road) biking, swimming. i'm currently cautious with the more fun stuff like tennis, football (soccer), basketball, because of the injury risk regarding the marathon training (a sprained ankle happens fast, and can jeopardize 9 months worth of training at this point). once the marathon is done, i want to do more of the other stuff again, and definitely start doing more upper body stuff, strengthen the back etc... basically, i want to be healthy. that's the main goal behind all this.

so yeah, that's my story, in case anyone was interested ;)

I have a weird issue with running...or jogging,I guess. When I jog or run slowly, my lower back starts hurting almost immediately. But when I sprint, I have no issues at all, but I cannot sprint for ever, so I basically don't do much running...Anyone ever had similar issues?

^ quite familiar with the phenomenon - had the same issues, as did the GF (she didn't need to sprint to be okay, but still preferred a rather fast pace). the movement and the related forces are simply different, and i think the legs take much more of the impact when you're sprinting.

what helped me (and the GF) was to first do some targeted back training, because i really lacked in the core region. once that was a little better, i could move into the running. the stronger back (and abs - they help stabilize your torso and make it easier for the back) can tolerate the impact a little better, and as you get to running more, your running economy improves and reduces the stress on the back.

that's the other thing, of course, that'll help - running economy. posture helps (upright, but relaxed; leaning forward without slouching; focusing on the hips helps - for instance, going uphill instead of bending your upper body forward as most people do, keep it straight and tip the pelvis forward). also, smaller steps (and higher frequency) will always reduce negative impact, not just on the back.

hope some of this is helpful.
by now, i actually go out for a run as a remedy whenever my back hurts.

oh, and re: not sprinting forever - intervals are always great, so there's still some running you can do ;)
