if we're talking numbers - i'm currently 30kg from my all-time high
although i'm actually keeping an eye on those numbers and trying not to go to low, maybe add a couple back on.
it feels odd, but it's really not that easy to keep the weight on, since what's keeping me in shape currently is - as moxie knows - training for my first marathon, which will be the Marine Corps in washington, end of october. had my first 20 mile run this past weekend, it went good enough.
still a bit bizarre to me. i wasn't obese, but very heavy all through high school. and very much not in shape. last year of school, i quit after 20 minutes in our PE class attempt to do 10k (i'd not even finished the 8k the year before). today, i got up at 6 to have a 8mile/13k easy run.
and yeah, just like with August, the recipe is pretty simple - eat less and better, and train more. the first 20kg went rather fast though. the thing was, a thyroid problem had basically kept me from losing weight before... it didn't make me bigger, but lower hormone levels make it harder for your body to burn fat, shed weight etc. which didn't exactly help my motivation. i got meds to fix that by the end of high school, but wasn't too aware of the weight issue that came with it, and went on like before, and didn't lose any weight at first - until i decided to go a little lighter food-wise for lent, switching meat sandwiches with fruit and softdrinks with water. and then, for the first time in my life, i actually LOST weight. needless to say, this was rather motivating, so i kept up the stricter diet, exercised modestly and lost about 20kg in maybe half a year, and another 5 in the following six months.
really getting in shape was another step though. a year later (by then, the thyroid had recovered and i could drop the meds), i started upping the exercise slowly - mostly running, but that also helped make other sports, tennis (which i suck at and never really got to learn, tbh), basketball (better) more intense. i put some of the weight back on, but differently. mind you, i'm still no calvin klein underwear model, and i'll probably never really get rid of the little belly, the reminder of where i was
don't mind that, though (and it doesn't show in shirts, let alone suits
).
thing is, i feel - and throughout the process always felt - good about how much i ate. never really starved myself. one part. i think that this really might be my "natural" self, a rather slim body type. these days, as i said, if i just go by what the body asks for, i'll be more likely to lose weight, and when i try to build some muscle, it's comparatively hard.
right now, my workout calendar is strongly dominated by the running. usually, i also do some (mountain and road) biking, swimming. i'm currently cautious with the more fun stuff like tennis, football (soccer), basketball, because of the injury risk regarding the marathon training (a sprained ankle happens fast, and can jeopardize 9 months worth of training at this point). once the marathon is done, i want to do more of the other stuff again, and definitely start doing more upper body stuff, strengthen the back etc... basically, i want to be healthy. that's the main goal behind all this.
so yeah, that's my story, in case anyone was interested
