I'm going with a Masters at best... and even that's no shoe-in. Federer IMO at the time was done after the Cilic AO final.

I think he can win 2 more slams and then retire. Things change quickly in tennis. He can stil find his old magic, if for a short time.

Really mate? I admire your optimism and hope I'm wrong but I thought he left it out there at the AO. It was kind of like watching somebody come through a nervous breakdown.

I still think he can win another Wimbledon. Chances aren't great but it is far from impossible. I think/hope he just got a bit lazy after getting #1 back. If he was working hard after Miami and this is the result then yes he is totally cooked. The mental side can come and go and it has with Rafa and Nole as well. I expected he'd struggle quite a bit after Rotterdam, I just figured it wouldn't be to this extent.

Remember what people on these boards were saying about Djokovic a few months ago? To them, Djokovic was done for. They were saying that he could not come back to win after he took a long break.

Like Britbox, I admire your optimism but the unfortunate reality is Djokovic is 31 and Federer is 37. That for me is why I'm unfortunately thinking he's done for. The AO will tell us a lot since it's much faster than the laughable pos USO for the last 2 years but if he fails to even reach the semis there, he'll be another half year older by Wimbledon and that's not helping his cause.

Your points are logical, but even with Djokovic at 31, people were saying that he could not do what Fedal did, when they came from long breaks to win grand slams. I agree that Fed’s chances are slim, given how atrocious his game is right now, but I also want to think that taking a break could help him recover.

I still don't believe it! Nole came out of nowhere to probably end up #1 soon! He just didn't look like there was much passion left! Maybe getting to that Wimbledon SF against Nadal helped! Like McEnroe missing Borg, I thought Novak was missing Nadal when he took off for a while with injury in '16! :yesyes: :p  :ptennis:

AO and Wim 19 are his last chances to win a slam on paper. Diff between faker and Fed is that faker has his postprime left, Fed has used that up too with 3 more slams so he's done.

Fed needs a long break to re-energise himself, like he did in 2016...he came out absolutely swinging playing at a level nobody expected of him. Now that he is just petty and even the journeymen want a piece of him, can’t just carry on and go through the motion, unless he wants to join them (most achieved journeyman ever?).

Roger had an amazing first quarter of 2017, but then its been a slide since then that was somewhat ameliorated by Novak's struggles. But Novak's back and if Rafa comes back healthy, anything less than that version of Roger--which was like a flashback peak into his prime self from a decade previously--will see him as a distant third fiddle like 2011-16, and maybe not even that.

I know he won't skip Basel unless injured, but I almost wish he'd skip Paris and the WTF and try to recapture whatever he found in late 2016.

Well, I thought he was done winning Majors after 2012, so what do I know? But from AO 2017 to the next one, there were so many flashes of the old brilliance, and then a lot of head scratchers. The Wimbledon loss to Anderson this year seemed to seal it. But, though I can't put it as colorfully as @JesuslookslikeBorg, it's hard to put another Wimbledon past him. I suppose 2019 will tell us a lot.

After almost beating faker at Bercy, it looks like Fed may just have another slam in him. Fingers crossed.

That’s just one match, his previous 10 matches he played at a level that would deserve first at best second round losses. Him winning Basel is so lucky, players were either choking, playing crap or ready to wrap up the year. Besides, his level against Novak still wasn’t near his early 2017 run which we haven’t seen since, and looks like won’t ever come back. I thought he needs another 6 month off to find that form, but looks he won’t do it.
