To all the Dad's on the board, and to those who have been mentors/fathers to others who have come into your life:

Where were you on Mother's Day, then, eh? There is no official Hallmark greeter for TF. I believe nehmeth just felt inspired, which is nice.

Lovely sentiment Nehmeth.

I didn't realise the US and the UK celebrate Father's Day on the same date. We celebrate Mother's Day in the UK a few months earlier than you do. I remember years ago being in the US and seeing all the signage. I ended up getting my mum a gift and a card. When I got back she was thrilled but she did say, "Didn't we do this a few months ago?" You can never spoil your mum too often... or your dad. :)

I know you were kidding ftan, but I'm also going to brag about my father a little bit now.

You see, my mother died when I was twelve. She was the light of my father's life as well as mine. Somehow amid the grief and the medical bills of a prolonged bout with cancer, he took what was left of his savings and bought me a purebred Arabian horse and made sure I had lessons from an Olympic medalist and world renowned trainer. At the same time he gave me my first racquet and put me in the hands of the club pro who later went on to a very successful career as a collegiate coach. Dad was trying do what he could to help fill the void left by our loss.

He didn't just try to fill it with things either. He made sure the territory he covered was reduced so that he could be home every night for supper. He took several cooking classes and even a baking class to make sure there was more to the menu than the staple of sandwiches and pizza. Even though he'd lost the love of his life - he was there for me. He took me to every horse show, every tennis match, celebrating every win and encouraging me after every loss.

He was my Dad and my Mom, and my best friend. In all the emotional turmoil and upheaval - he was the steady, the constant, the one who provided normalcy in the chaos, who made ordinary times special and brought laughter and joy into everything we did. He was by no means perfect, but he was humble enough to look me in the eye and own it when he made a mistake, or lost his temper.

Many years later, and he's still here, grayer, older, more fragile. The mischievous twinkle is still in his eyes, and that steady, strong, unwavering love is what keeps his heart beating. I'm a blessed man. I've had a good example to learn from. Father's Day means a lot to me. :)

What a beautiful post Nehmeth. I felt quite teary reading it. Your father sounds like a wonderful man. I know it sounds like a very cliched thing to say but I'm sure your mum would be very proud of your dad. He obviously did a very good job.
