The Tournament:
The Hall of Fame Championships is an international tennis tournament that has been held every year in July since 1976 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. Tthe tournament is the only event played on grass courts outside of Europe, and it offers the only opportunity to see professional men's tennis in the Northeast prior to the US Open. The Tennis Hall of Fame Inductions coincide with the tournament.
The Players:
Up until 2011, when John Isner won the tournament, the top seed had never triumphed at Newport, a trait that has led to the moniker "the Casino Curse," due to the location of the Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino. This year the top seed is Steve Johnson, and he is joined by Ivo Karlovic and Gilles Muller to head up the field. Defending champion Rajeev Ram returns but is unseeded.
