Debating about creating a thread so we can contribute what player is the best, only going by their major streaks! Obviously Federer's at the top of all lists since he won 5 straight Wimbledons and USO's with 17 overall! Borg will be at least 4th with 4 FO's (6) and 5 Wimbledons in a row and 11 majors overall! Some will say Nadal's s/b in 3rd place w/ 2 FO streaks of 4 and 5 in Paris and 14 majors overall! Nole's in here somewhere since winning 3 straight AO (5) is unprecedented in the Open era w/ 10 majors and counting! Lendl's in the top 10 w/ 3 straight USO wins and 8 finals; another record! Any ideas? Just a thought and off the top of my head!

1) Federer - 5 straight Wimbledons and USO's (17 total majors)
2) Sampras - 3 & a 4 Wimbledon streak (14 majors overall)
3)
4) Borg - 5 straight Wimbledons and 4 FO's; 6 overall (11 total majors)
5) Nadal - 4 & a 5 FO streak (14 majors overall)
6) Djokovic - 5 AO (3 in a row) 10 majors overall
7)
8) Lendl - 3 straight USO's and 8 finals (8 majors)
9)
10) Connors - No real streaks, but honorable mention of 5 strt. aps. @ USO winning on 3 different surfaces ('74 grass, '76 clay, '78 HC) - (8 majors)

That's up to you! It's a question! Those are the ones I could come up OTTH! I'm sure there's something I'm missing! I'm hardly infallible; close, but not quite! lol!

The Lendl streak at the US Open is even more impressive isn't it? I thought it was 8 consecutive finals? And honorable mention to Federer's 5 consecutive finals at RG as well... from 05 - 09 I believe?

I don't see how making finals but losing the title counts as a "winning streak."

@Jamie:  I'm not sure how you're organizing your criteria, but a "streak" at Majors means winning them consecutive years in a row, does it not?  I get if you want to tip the balance to more overall Majors.  But, then, wouldn't it go like this?:
  1. Roger Federer - 5 straight Wimbledon, 5 straight USO (17 overall)   **Honorable mention for doing it at 2 Majors
  2. Rafael Nadal - 5 straight RG (14 overall); also 4 straight RG  **Honorable mention for 9 total (most ever in one Major)
  3. Bjorn Borg - 5 straight Wimbledon; also 4 straight RG (11 overall)
  4. Pete Sampras - 4 straight Wimbledon (14 overall)
  5. Novak Djokovic - 3 straight AO (10 overall)
  6. Ivan Lendl - 3 straight USO (8 overall)

It's because I know there are bigger and better streaks in the Amateur Era! They're discounted like Emerson's record because players like Gonzales, Rosewall, and Laver went pro! Big Bill Tilden should be on this list regardless of the era IMO so I left slots open for the more knowledgeable of our group or for people willing to research it in the record books! ;-) :bye:

If you had wanted to fill in the blanks with the pre-Open era, you probably should have said so.  You haven't made your original point more coherent by this post.  You didn't like my rejiggering of the list?

It's a blog post; get over it! I can't argue with any of your listing, giving Borg bonus points for what he accomplished in just 7-8 years! I've written extensively on him with results that you have to think of as "staggering" because of what he had to overcome! He was one of the last people to give up the wood racket and continued with it well past retirement! He won Paris and Wimbledon back to back 3 straight years ('78-'80) and was a set or 2 from making it 4! He won the "Old World Triple;" Rome, Paris, Wimbledon in '78! He had to survive many challenges in winning those 5 Wimbledons; actually coming back from the grave on a few occasions! You have no idea how difficult it was to get a "break" back on grass back then! After he won a couple, it actually got easier, destroying Connors 4 times in SF and Finals from '77-'81! It was unfortunate Connors returned the favor at the USO stopping him on 2 surfaces; 1 his beloved clay and didn't come away with even 1 title! Borg was legitimately only beaten by 2 players in his prime: Connors and McEnroe; esp. at the USO! In his last season, it seemed like it would be a routine year in '81; won the FO over a newcomer in Ivan Lendl and made the final of Wimbledon! After losing it, I figured he could turn it around in NY! Another crushing loss and that was it! I didn't get a confirmation that he was done until the Masters the following Jan.! He made a few feeble attempts to return, but his heart wasn't in it! He put so much into winning matches back then; more mentally than physically and he was SPENT! I do give him GAWD-Like status; so thanks for that! It's late; sorry for the blather! lol! :yahoo:  B-)

Panatta beat Borg too!

I agree with Moxie on the pre-Open era.  Sure, there may have been some impressive streaks but at the same time they were diluted because the tour was split between pro and amateur.
