The Tournament:

The Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open joins Gstaad and Basel on the ATP World Tour calendar, as the first of three Swiss tournament stops. The ATP World Tour 250 tournament, which returned to the Swiss city in 2015 for the first time since 1991, is staged at the Tennis Club de Geneve at the Parc des Eaux-Vives, the oldest and largest tennis club in Switzerland.

About Geneva:

Known both as the "smallest of big cities", or the "city of peace", Geneva, among other things, is home to the European headquarters of UNO. The quayside of Lake Geneva, the parks, the old alleyways, and smart boutiques are an invitation to a leisurely stroll.

Geneva is linked to Europe's capital cities by its international airport, motorways and railway network. It is the seat of a number of major multinationals, as well as the International Red Cross Committee.

Today, Switzerland's second largest city is home to around twenty international organizations. The permanent missions of over 160 States represent their governments in the city's international conferences and organizations.

Geneva is a centre focused on the international economy. Whether private corporate or business, finance, in its widest sense, undeniably plays a major economic role in Geneva, which is a base for around a hundred foreign banks.

I don't know. Alex faces Gulbis tomorrow, and @Front242 has just reminded us he was once a "beast" on clay. Maybe. Plus, Stan is in and this is his hometown tourney. He'll have a chance to show where his tennis is. A lot of players to look at pre-RG: Fucsovic, Garin, Londero, Albot, Jarry.

Omg again? Maybe he prefers bo5 format. After loosing 2 sets there is still a chance to regroup.

Garin was beaten by Taro Daniel. Not what I expected.

garin will not be fussed, his 1st major main draw appearance (via direct entry) is coming up.

talking of direct entry/quals..the 1st major he won through to via q3 was on the grass of wimby..

his challenger career up to recent elevation to atp tour has been clay heavy in the extreme.

I thought the same, but I looked him up. Daniel has beaten Garin on clay. (They've only met in challengers, both on clay, and they split them.) Also, Daniel qualified for RG in 2017, and won his first round match. (v. Janowicz. Lost to PCB in 2nd round.) Also made it into the 2nd round of USO that year, losing to Rafa. Of note, he beat Novak at IW last year, though that was a lesser Djokovic. I'm not touting the guy, but he's 26, 6'3", so I'm just putting in the scouting report.

Wawrinka lost to Dzhumur in 3. I watched some of it. Both playing pretty well. Dzhumur is a dangerous character, but when I left off watching in the 3rd, I thought Stan was in a position to win. Not a great match to lose at home, just before RG.

I have a hard time believing that Taro is that tall and also because he is a Japanese. I even watched him in that IW match against Novak and had a feeling that guy is at least 4 inches smaller.

It's just a feeling from my side that something is odd. Like seeing a fat Ethiopian, that kind of a thing
Maybe you need to get over that. When Hyeon Chung was coming up (what is going on with him, btw?), and I was touting him, some people said: he's too small. And I reminded them that he was 6'1". Some of those Asian guys are pretty big. Taro Daniel is really tall. Check your preconceived notions at the door.:smooch:
