Here we go:
H2H is 1-0 in favor of Maria Sharapova, the exact same deficit Garbine Muguruza faced when she evened it with Serena!

I want Garbine to win, but Maria is tough to defeat. And Garbine has already got Serena I don't know how much more I can ask of her?

Hopefully the prettier one in the first pic wins but likely straights sets to the noisy (understatement of the year award) one.

Sam might have taken Maria today, but she has too little belief. Garbiñe has the game, a good head. Plus, young players with nothing to lose are dangerous. (Ask Serena.) Maria knows she's the favorite now, and will likely get a bit tight if the Spaniard takes after her quickly and aggressively the way she did Serena. I do agree that beating Serena AND Maria would be perhaps more than we can expect, but, hey, that's what stars are made of. I went with Muguruza in 3. I hope she's going to be a future star.

^ It will be a big task for Garbine to say defeat Serena and now Maria
If Garbine can maintain the same tactic's when she defeated Serena....she might just stand a chance

There is only one player who has beaten Serena and Sharapova in

the same tournament

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That one player being Elena Dementieva in Toronto in 2009

Any thoughts? And is there a chance of a second person doing it in 2013?

Don't really think Mug will do it but.........

Very interesting info, RJD. Thanks.

I don't think Muguruza will do it, either. I voted for Sharapova in 2.

Muguruza in three hard fought sets. I think this is her breakthrough event and she takes down the second favored--for all the reasons Moxie recounted. Now, this is also what my heart desires to be fair.

^ As much as I would like for Mugu to validate her stamp on this tournament, if she's going to defeat Maria, it has to be in 2 sets. Maria just gets stubborn in the 3rd set.

I just had to vote Maria in 3
I could see Garbine taking a set off Maria if she plays like she has been but I just can't see Mugu or anyone else here beating Maria in 3
I really don't mind if Mugu did it in 2

Well-said by you and Kskate. That's how she got Serena…took her out before Serena had a chance to get her teeth in it. It's a big ask, but I'm going with Muguruza, and I'll vote in two, because, if she allows Maria back in, presuming she does come out strong against her, Maria isn't one who needs to be asked twice if she wants to win it.

I always think I like Sharapova but then when I watch her, wow, what a racket (not the one she's holding).

I reckon Maria will take this in straights though. Muguruza has had a very impressive tournament, backing up her win over Serena, which is something many men and women fail to do after taking a big win, particularly in a grand slam. However, I just think Sharapova will have a bit too much for her, in terms of raw ability and know-how at this stage in the competition.

I loved this post especially the part about "Maria isn't one who needs to be asked twice if she wants to win it". I think that is a perfect description of Maria!

Garbine has a bandaged on her left thigh....I hope it is just a cautionary thing.
