I just stumbled across a surprising stat. Roger Federer's ace% (11.6) this year is the best of his career, just edging 2008 (11.3).
Check out his ace % over the last few years, going back to 2012: 10.7%, 8.2%, 10.3%, 11.6%
You can see right there how a major factor in his declined play in 2013 was a drop in his serve, perhaps due to his lingering back injury. I know he has made other adjustments, but I think the serve is a big factor.
I'm also thinking this means that his overall game in 2015 is a hair below 2014, as he has very similar results but a superior serve - in other words, he's relying more on his serve than he did last year. But this is pretty minor.
