"Yeah, the longer the match, the longer you spend on Centre Court, it's not a bad thing," he said. "That's what I was thinking today. It went by very quickly. But I guess at the end of the day you'd prefer to have it this way, walk away as a winner instead of being out there for five hours and losing in the first round."

That might be my favorite quote ever by an athlete. I've never heard anything quite like it -- the theme of wanting more time on the field/court.

It might appear farse, but if you look at it, Fed has done a mockery of the first few rounds during 04-07. Yes, he says its good to spend more time on Centre Court, but he does the opposite and demolishes the opponents ruthlessly if he can. That is his own way of saying things as what Rafa says about the 100th ranked player on clay: "He is the favorite to win. I will have to play at my best, no. " :D

I would agree with you if he said this back in '04-'07 (possibly he did, I don't know), but I think he is being genuine here and it's a reflection on his career winding down. He knows he doesn't have a whole lot of time left.

reminds me of his comments after the five set battle with Simon in RG - "it's always fun being part of matches like this". ;)
