^ Just saw that. Terrible news, it had to be an incredibly tough decision to make. Here's hoping he comes back strong in 2017 and beyond.

Fed's Olympic Dream is over so this won't have been a decision he took lightly.

Reading between the lines, 2017 will almost certainly be the final curtain on this illustrious career.

he will be back and will be a factor in 2017.

he is making a smart decision to rest, recover, rehab, and refurbish.

he will make good use of the 5 months that are remaining in this year.

"The doctors advised that if I want to play on the ATP World Tour injury free for another few years, as I intend to do, I must give both my knee and body the proper time to fully recover."

Interesting that Fed talks as if he wants to play for a few more years and retirement is not in his thinking.

Injuries often have a way of making that decision on your behalf... I really can't see Fed playing for a "few more" years... at least at the highest level. He might get a couple more competitive years if he remains injury free and will always be relevant... but I think his major winning days are already behind him.

Pretty shocking news about taking the rest of the year off the tour. He talked even a few years ago about looking forward to taking his girls to the Olympics, as they'd be old enough to remember it. I'm sure he'd probably reconsidered bringing his young children a while back, with the health concerns, so maybe it's not as much of a blow to miss the OG as it would have been.

This is definitely a possibility, that his chances of coming back strong in 2017 are better if he rests. Overall, as tough as it is, this is probably the best move he can make. 2013 was kind of a similar scenario with having a bad back much of that year and not being competitive at the big events, and he ended up playing through that.

The one big concern is that his ranking will plummet, he will be lucky to finish in the top 15 and even then that means he can face one of the elite players in R16 at the big events.

^If he's back fighting fit, then his ranking will rise. Short of Novak I don't think he has any reason to fear anyone even now, and that's an indictment of the competition on the tour at the moment

True, but unless he has a blazing run at the start of the year it's tough to picture him being top 4 before the end of the USO and that means tough draws at the events that count. And even if he is favored over everyone but Nole the cumulative effect of a series of tough matches is obvious at this point.

That's a fair point. The way things stand though. Top 4 or not, a fair bit of what he has to contend with is luck of the draw anyway. Let's say he starts next year at 15 as you've mentioned. I don't think it's going to take him that long to get back to 6 or 7, I really don't. From there, there's the risk of meeting Novak in a QF, but it is what it is. I rather suspect that others will be more fearful of being in his quarter than he'll be of them. Yes it makes winning slams more difficult, but it it'll also be entertaining

again i disagree, the list of players he should fear would easily include: Novak, Andy, Rafa, Raonic, Kyergios, Nishikori, Cilic. He will come back rusty, like anyone would be after half a year of rest, and all these players can easily outplay him on any given day......don't understand that people still over-rate a guy of his age and mileage, plus other factors against him.

We knew long ago his contacts expire in 2017. In case they don't get renewed, I'm afraid that's it for Federer, he won't play for peanuts.

^ I don't get it. But hey weren't you just saying a couple months ago he was playing the best tennis of his career these past few years when he did next to nothing?

No injured player is any good. Not only that they can't play, but the return to the tour after a lengthy injury break is tough. And tennis does not gain anything by injuries to players. Federer will drop a lot of points, but it is what it is, his main priority will have to be getting healthy again. Sometimes these things can't be helped. Every player suffers at some point. Fed has always been meticulous with his conditioning, so if he thinks he needs an extended time off for his knee, I am sure that is the case. No reason to think that he won't be back next year.

Not only that i said that, but Federer said that too, so no matter how hard it is to accept it, it is true. And what do you mean "he did next to nothing"?

Federer played some great slam finals against the best player ever and ended up second best. He also beat the GOAT several times in lower than slam tournaments.

Now Federer may be injured or on a silent ban as some people suggest which doesn't deny his special game last year and also this year at AO.
