Federer and/or Nadal had been in the top 4 since July 7, 2003, after Federer won his first major at Wimbledon and rose from #5 to #3.

Federer is currently #7, suffered a knee injury and opted for surgery after the Australian Open, only played 28 matches, without winning a title, and hasn't played since losing in the Wimbledon SF this year, calling it a season to rest and rehabilitate his knee.

Nadal is currently #5, has played 52 matches with only .750 win pct., matching last year which is his lowest win percentage since 2004, but was still able to win successive singles titles on clay in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

Is this the end of Fedal's time in the Top 4, or will one or both return?

Hard to say. Rafa should be able to claw his way back into the top four during clay season, if not earlier. In the live rankings he's only about 1300 points behind #4 Milos Raonic and with a resurgent clay season could be back in the top 3-4 by next June. For Roger, if all goes well he'll be back. But I could also see a scenario where he's wobbly and ends up more in the #6-10 range next year, due to skipping tournaments and more upsets.

When I saw this news I thought, it's kinda sad, but not shocking. They have a combined age that's greater than the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan combined. They have so many miles on the clock that it takes more than one clock to hold them. I sorta shrugged and said, "yeah, and Pete's outta the top 4 too." In some senses, they're sepia toned players, from a previous generation. But actually, they both may return to the top 4 because the Next Generation is AKA "The Missing Link", and the generation to follow is still teeming with green- and yellowhorns.

So in short (you wish! :laydownlaughing ), the answer is, yes, they'll both return to the top 4 - or at least Rafa will, it might be tough for Roger - but it might be that they're still about as effective as a shovel in a sinking boat...

As the top 4 go (Rafa I don't see getting back in),Roger might due to how he plays the game.
