fresh from Facebook, the news everybody waited for ;)

Roger Federer

I am happy to announce that beginning in Melbourne, Stefan Edberg will join Severin Lüthi on my coaching team. Severin, who has been part of my team for the last 7 years, will do most of the weeks and Stefan has agreed to work with us for at least 10 weeks starting at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Stefan was my childhood hero, and I am really looking forward to spending time and learning from him.

Great stuff! We need Nadal to hire Mats and then we can have an 80's night on the forum! :snigger

Good to see you, buddy! Happy New Year! :)

and to you, too :)

work won't allow much forum time, unfortunately. still, very curious as to what the New Year and the 80ies nostalgia will bring. and i still can't wrap my head around the idea of Becker coaching. maybe it's because through german media, i've been overexposed to his celebrity life antics, but he doesn't seem like the most professional guy these days.

Absolutely. We're not so exposed to Boris and still get the same impression.

I wonder what Edberg can offer Roger. Roger has more experience and achievement at the highest level, and he's currently involved. I know, Stefan can bring his own knowledge, which will be a great help, plus Roger most likely enjoys his company and expertise. But it seems like a perfect storm of 80's stars coming to the front now (not disregarding Stefan was also a great 90's star - as was Boris and Lendl! :p )...

Assuming the schedule that I posted in "Federer's schedule" forum is valid, Fed will
be playing in 16 tournaments and will be playing for 21 weeks. Edberg will be with him
for 10 of these 21 weeks.

Most probably these 10 weeks that Edberg has committed would include 8 weeks
of Grand Slam and a couple of torunaments that take place in Europe (which will
make travel easy for Edberg) such as Madrid, Rome, Halle, Basel, Bercy and WTF.

Andy reacted to the news on twitter:

"How great is it to have all these legends of the game coaching?! Absolutely loving it.. #mycoachisbetterthanyoursnanananana"

I guess it was inevitable that some twitter users did not take it in the spirit it was meant. I sometimes wonder why he bothers.

That hash-tag is hilarious! And inevitable. :) I love the battle of the 80's-90's amongst coaches. It will definitely need a soundtrack.

I can't see Boris being a good coaching choice for Djokovic and not just because of his private life. Boris has always been a dog in that respect, but just listening to his commentary on the matches makes me cringe. He's horrible at it - and that IF you can understand what he's saying. I'm just not sure exactly what it is that he brings to the table that will be advantageous to Nole - especially for the French. Boris couldn't play on clay to save his life. And lord knows fitness was never his forte.

Question - about 6 months ago Boris signed an endorsement deal for an online betting company called Youwin.com. IIRC it was a long-term deal. Does he have to forfeit that deal in order to coach? Because it really doesn't seem to be a good idea to have your coach fronting for bookmakers and a casino. Could just be me though...
