The main contenders:
I'm sorry if you favorite isn't mentioned as a contender, like Petra Kvitova or Caroline Wozniacki for example but tennis frontier only allows 10 images in a post and therefor I've chosen the ones which I think have a fair chance. No offense OK? - You're welcome to add the picture and information of the player of whom you think should have been mentioned as a contender

Ranking points with last year's French Open points excluded:

As you may have noticed, Victoria Azarenka probably will regain her #2 ranking after the French Open unless she gets stuck in the QF and Maria reaches the final. Serena Williams will remain the #1 no matter what happens.

I would definitely say Serena got the better draw. Sharapova the worst. Jankovic, Li, Kvitova, Azarenka and Stosur are all on her side of the draw.

its about time Serena has a fair draw:clapshe has to take it match by match...if she plays to potential she be in it to win it...

Well as you say Serena is the best, so no draw should be totally out of her capability to make it through to the end.

Just to make things clear - here is the new top 10 before RG with last years points stripped:

1 Serena Williams 11615
2 Victoria Azarenka 8725
3 Maria Sharapova 8015
4 Agnieszka Radwanska 5965
5 Na Li 5055
6 Angelique Kerber 4635
7 Sara Errani 4435
8 Petra Kvitova 4275
9 Caroline Wozniacki 3465
10 Samantha Stosur 2745

Serena is safe on the top for a while. My babe got a fairly tough draw but maybe that's the best because there are no 1 match wonders only players she knows and maybe also know how to defeat them. We'll see and I surely hope she will get to the 4th round. That could be a good mental lift to her confidence which is the only problem she has. Her gameplay is as good as it can be and she is super fit. Go get them Caroline:heart:

Well I just corrected a couple of numbers for 9 and 10, so we all start at the right spot :)
By the way the weather is bad in Paris too - right now 16.00 there are only 9 centigrades. The weatherforecast for next week looks chilli with danger of rain in periods especially Tuesday - more here:

Single BH, thank you for the great opening post. It is soooooo useful to have the draw and ranking points right at the top.

The tennis gods are smiling upon Serena this year. Most of the threats are on Pova's side. So much so that I would be surprised if she made the final. I would not have stated that before the draw was released. My opinion is that it will take a miracle for her to defend, or even stay ranked two at the conclusion of the FO.

Hoergren, it is touching how firmly you support Woz. I hope for your sake she survives a few rounds, although Lobson in round one is not easy.

It will be an exciting two weeks. I wish every player an injury-free tournament!

Masha should make it to the QF at least *hopeful look* - I can not see any real obstacles to hinder her

R1 S.Hsieh
R2 E. Bouchard or T. Pironkova
R3 T Paszek or M. Oudin or J. Zheng or V. Dolonc
R4 D. Cibulkova or L. Taurenko or M. Erakovic or E. Baltacha or qualifier or A. Canandu or K. Knapp or S. Stephens

If she can make it that far then her likely QF opponents are: P. Kvitova or J. Jankovic or S. Stosur
and her likely SF opponents are: N. Li or V. Azarenka
A tough draw for sure but not impossible - Winning the final however seems like an impossible task IF Serena is waiting there for her. - But hey 2-14 or 2-30 in Serena's favor - it does not really matter anymore?

A tough draw for sure but not impossible -

I think she'll make it so the SF, for sure, but if she meets Azarenka things could go poorly. I would give Maria a better chance against N. Li than Victoria.

^^ All depends if Vika gets there. She hasn't performed well on the clay in years past. We'll see how she looks in the early rounds.

Why are people saying if Maria meets Vika, it is a bad thing for Maria? They are far closer than people make it out to be in terms of competitiveness. Maria dismissed Vika rather handily in Stuttgart last year. Where clay helps Sharapova is having the time for her shots I think having Li and Sharapova as an outing in both the quarters and semis is a harder task for Vika than Maria seeing Vika on her half of the draw, and even then Vika still might not manage before that Li either. Maria is more likely to make it farther at RG than Vika

I wouldn't say Maria has an easy quarter there are a few players that can make life difficult for her should she have an off day. I would say of anyone if Serena doesn't make it to the semis or final then shame on her for not taking advantage of her decent draw.

Radwanska is not a contender. Kvitova is more of a contender than Radwanska.
