About Davis Cup:

The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from over 150 competing countries, making it the world's largest annual team sporting competition. It is described by the organisers as the "World Cup of Tennis", and the winners are referred to as the World Champions. The competition began in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States. By 2023, 155 nations entered teams into the competition.

The most successful countries over the history of the competition are the United States (winning 32 titles and finishing as runners-up 29 times) and Australia (winning 28 titles, including six with New Zealand as Australasia, and finishing as runners-up 21 times). The current champions are Italy, who beat Australia to win their second title in 2023.

About Malaga:

Málaga is a municipality of Spain, capital of the Province of Málaga, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. With a population of 578,460 in 2020, it is the second-most populous city in Andalusia and the sixth most populous in the country. It lies in Southern Iberia on the Costa del Sol ("Coast of the Sun") of the Mediterranean, primarily in the left bank of the Guadalhorce. The urban core originally developed in the space between the Gibralfaro Hill and the Guadalmedina.

Málaga's history spans about 2,800 years, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe. According to most scholars, it was founded about 770 BC by the Phoenicians from Tyre as Malaka. From the 6th century BC the city was under the hegemony of Ancient Carthage, and from 218 BC, it was under Roman rule, economically prospering owing to garum production. In the 8th century, after a period of Visigothic and Byzantine rule, it was placed under Islamic rule. In 1487, the Crown of Castile gained control in the midst of the Granada War. In the 19th century, the city underwent a period of industrialisation followed by a decay in all socioeconomic parametres in the last third of the century.

Completely unsurprisingly, Rafa has been nervy, hitting too short, which is costing him the match.
He is still fighting hard. If he can break Botic serve he might turn it around, but that's just hoping at the moment.

Very good doubles match. All players playing well, but Koolhof is on another level. Dutch won the 1st set.

Agree Koolhof has been the 'player ' of the doubles tie so far, apparently he is also set to retire after the DC
I really thought Rafa would play the doubles for Spain, they could have played RBA as the other singles player for Spain, just my thoughts

Agree. RBA won a tournament recently and could have beaten Botic. Only in that case could be a dead rubber match for Rafa in dubs. Still, Rafa and Granollers would be good, but I feel Alcaraz is carrying the spaniards here in the dubs even though the Granollers is the specialist.

Yes, though Alcaraz sometimes has been caught out in his position on the court, that is where Granollers, the specialist, should be directing him more, I remember when Rafa and Alcaraz played doubles for Spain at the Olympics, Rafa kind of guided him more, Spain is a up break ,so lets see if they can win the 2nd set

I thought both of the Spaniards did a lot for the effort, but, in fairness, the Dutch were very strong. It was an exciting match, though I'd have liked a different outcome.

He also said that he started his Davis Cup journey with a loss, and ended it with one, too. Nice humor. His first singles loss in DC since 2005, I think? Or 2004?

When Alcaraz won today, in singles, he said he did it for Rafa. When Rafa helped Spain win their first DC in 2004, he always said later he'd done it for Moyà. Also a nice symmetry, and passing of the torch. #payingitback
