The Tournament:

The Croatia Open began life as the Yugoslavia Open back in 1990. The tournament and side-events attract more than 100.000 guests, which at that time makes Umag inevitable summer center of tennis, beauty, entertainment, social gathering and experience of tastes and scents of Istria.

About Umag

Umag is a coastal city in Istria, Croatia and the municipality includes Savudrija/Salvore, the westernmost point of Croatia.

The geographical location of Umag, in particular, has ensured an intensive and dynamic growth of the tourist industry after World War II, which has been expanding rapidly ever since. The closeness of big west European markets and the rise in standard of East European countries have both accounted for the expansion of this economic branch which is tightly linked to other economic resources in the region the most significant being agriculture.

The best fertile soil and the vast arable land in the area have fostered the production of traditional Mediterranean crops present in the region for thousands of years, with particular emphasis on olive growing and wine growing (Wiki)

Good ol´fighter Rogerio Dutra Silva (Rogerinho, as we call him here, which means "little Rogerio") finally catches a break an beats top 20 player. They guy is the definition of a journeyman, but fought hard his entire career (he supported his younger brother career too, and at one point they would struggle even to eat), is at his best ranking at 33 years old, and I would be very happy to seem him win this (unlikely, I know).

His good run comes to an end. Goffin also suffers a similar fate. The #1 seed bounced out by Dodig in straights.

Rublev was the lucky loser, and this is his first ATP tour win. Only the 7th LL to win an ATP tournament. He's on the list for the #NextGen tournament.

I've been talking Rublev up for a couple years, with 2016 being a bit disappointing. But he seems to be having a bit of a breakthrough; I was hoping he'd reach the top 50 by the end of this year but he's already up to #49 in the live rankings. Is top 30 too greedy?

Also, Rublev's now the youngest player to hold an ATP title. As far as I can tell, he and Zverev are the only teenagers to win titles since Nishikori in 2008.

You have been. I love that he made so much out of his LL situation. Shows a lot of grit.
