About the tournament:
The Chengdu Open, which debuted in 2016, will be contested on outdoor hard courts, joining Shenzhen, Beijing and Shanghai as Chinese hosts during the ATP World Tour's Asian swing. The venue in Chengdu boasts a modern facility with a centre court capacity of 6,000, two additional show courts with 2,000 seats each, and a total of 20 hard courts and 12 indoor courts. Chengdu is at higher elevation, (1,640') which is unusual for tennis.
About Chengdu:
Chengdu is the capital of southwestern China's Sichuan province. Chengdu's history dates back to at least the 4th century B.C., when it served as capital for the Shu Kingdom. Artifacts from that dynasty are the focus of the Jinsha Site Museum. The city is also home to the famous Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, a conservation center where visitors can view endangered giant pandas in a natural habitat.
The Shufengya Yun Sichuan Opera showcases traditional opera, which includes fire-breathing and face-changing (sleight-of-hand mask changes). Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum explores the life and works of a renowned Tang Dynasty poet. Contrasting with the New Century Global Center, a massive shopping complex containing hotels and a water park, are numerous quaint teahouses scattered throughout the modern metropolis. The city is famed for its cuisine, defined by the spicy Sichuan peppercorn, which flavors hot-pot dishes and other regional specialties.
