When asked about the previous final loss v Serena: I just put that aside today. I was like, Come on. Let's go for it. Forget about the nerves, even though it's hard. I just had a little different mindset today.

Q. You're a champion. You have won Roland Garros. You are a Grand Slam champion. Would you say it's okay? You're satisfied? It's done?
MUGURUZA: No. Well, of course I'm very happy, but I'd like to have more. My dream is to continue and win more tournaments, similar tournaments, and to dominate. When I am on the court I want to dictate my game and bring more of these cups back home.

Good mindset.

I'm so proud of her, at 22 years old and having that mentality and not afraid to anyone. I hope the young guys take that good example and they could win at least a MS.....

She seems very grounded and level headed but with purpose and a strong mentality. The first of a number of majors I think.

Green carpet treatment awaits Muguruza in Mallorca

When Spain's newly-crowned French open champion Garbine Muguruza arrives in Mallorca this week it will not be a red carpet they lay down but a lush green one.

In a dream scenario for promoters of the ambitious new WTA event being staged just a few kilometres from the party resort of Magaluf, the world number two is the headline act of a tournament being dubbed Wimbledon by the Mediterranean.

Newly crowned French Open champion Garbine Muguruza is taking nothing for granted as she maintains a level-headed viewpoint about her Wimbledon chances. Playing in only her second grand slam final at Roland Garros, the 22-year-old defeated top seed Serena Williams in straight sets to become the first Spanish woman since 1998 to win a major

Boy she makes a dress look fine! Apart from that, she's a sweetie in personality. I saw a special on her on Tennis Channel last year--very informative and she is very likeable. By the way, the question and answer on her above looks to be from the Masters event in Miami on Biscayne Key.

VERY WELL SAID!

garbine completely earned this first FO and major of hers by playing , simply put , BETTER than the Great Serena.

and I SAY THAT AS A FOREVER fan of MY great serena.
this is the way majors ought to be won by the ''next generations" -- by overcoming the greats before them in convincing fashion.

Yeah, she scrubs up well for sure. I think the QA is after the French though.

she's very charming, really. great talent, has more to learn --but definitely a welcome new big time champ!!!

she also has another good reason to be happy -- HER birth country colombia -- with its more reasonable young president -- has finally come around to beginning the resolution of that decades long conflict with the FARC communist rebels -- both sides willing to compromise . and both sides listening to each other's victims in a reconciliation process...

backed by also ''different sides" among latin american nations..and crucially -- was achieved BECAUSE the USA was not party to the talks.

as disparate in political views as VENEZUELA and CHILE...so it's a good development.

although she DID have the unsurprising ''let-down" after her FO - she should be in good form coming into the USO - eager even - and having learned more on consistency .

but tennis REALLY needed a fresh new BIG GAME player right among the top tiers - years are flowing by and soon even SERENA will be diminishing in her powers - which is only natural -- and the WTA definitely needs some girls to really step it up into their own gneneration after the ''SERENA ERA".

I think her birth country is Venezuela, Her father is Basque/Spaniard (like me) and her mother from Venezuela but they moved to Spain a long time ego where she started to play tennis

Muguruza was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1993 to a Spanish-Basque father, José Antonio Muguruza from Eibar, Gipuzkoa, and a Venezuelan mother, Scarlet Blanco, and has two elder brothers named Asier and Igor. She has dual Venezuelan-Spanish nationality. She began playing tennis at the age of three and, after moving to Spain with her family in 1999 when she was six years old, Muguruza trained at the Bruguera Tennis Academy near Barcelona.
