Serena Nominated For Laureus Award
Serena Williams is up for Laureus World Sportswoman Of The Year. She and another athlete are both trying to become the first three-time winner of the award - who is it?
After her outstanding 2013 season, Serena Williams has been nominated for Laureus World Sportswoman Of The Year. She could become the first female athlete to win the award three times.
Williams put together another historic season in 2013, winning 11 WTA titles - including her 16th and 17th Grand Slam titles at the French and US Opens. She compiled a 78-4 record that included a 34-match winning streak, the second-longest of the millennium after Venus Williams' 35-match winning streak in 2000, and she also earned $12,385,572 in prize money - the previous record was $7,923,920.
Additionally, Williams returned to No.1 in the world on February 18, making her the oldest World No.1 in the history of the WTA - and she finished the season as the year-end World No.1, as well.
It was the third time in her career she finished as year-end World No.1 - she also achieved the feat in 2002 and 2009 - and, fittingly, she won Laureus World Sportswoman Of The Year the following year both of those times, collecting the prestigious award in Monaco in 2003 and in Abu Dhabi in 2010.
In the 14 previous editions of the awards, from 2000 to 2013, Sportswoman Of The Year has gone to WTA players four times - Jennifer Capriati in 2002, Williams in 2003, Justine Henin in 2008 and Williams again in 2010. Williams and pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva are the only two women ever to win the award twice (Isinbayeva won it in 2007 and 2009). No woman has won it three times.
The six women up for this year's award are Williams and Isinbayeva, Nadine Angerer (soccer), Missy Franklin (swimming), Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (track and field - sprinting) and Tina Maze (skiing).
The 15th edition of the Laureus World Sports Awards will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on March 26, just a few weeks before the WTA heads there for the International-level BMW Malaysian Open.
There are a number of other Laureus World Sports Award categories and WTA players have won some of those as well - Capriati (Comeback Of The Year in 2001), Martina Hingis (Comeback Of The Year in 2006), Williams (Comeback Of The Year in 2007), Amélie Mauresmo (Breakthrough Of The Year in 2007) and Kim Clijsters (Comeback Of The Year in 2010). All awards are voted for by the academy.
