Tournament Info
Tier: Premier Prize Money: $885,500 Surface: Hard
Director: Cameron Pearson

Staged the first week of the year during the lead-up to the Australian Open, the Brisbane International has had quite an increase in status since its debut as a combined ATP-WTA tournament in 2009. It went from International to Premier level in 2012, with prize money for the women increasing from $220,000 to $655,000. Then in 2013 the purse went all the way up to $1 million.

Brisbane's champions include Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters, Petra Kvitova, Maria Sharapova and two-time winner Serena Williams. Clijsters' 2010 triumph was especially memorable, as she saved two match points in the final against rival and fellow Belgian Justine Henin in Henin's first event back after more than a year and a half away from tennis.

The capital and most populous city in the Australian state of Queensland, Brisbane is classified as a global city. It has hosted several international sporting extravaganzas, including the 1982 Commonwealth Games, the 2001 Goodwill Games and the 2008 Rugby League World Cup final

Mugu is the top seed since Maria and Simona withdrew.

Azarenka looks trim and fit. Now if she could just rectify that serve

Garbine off because her ankle, I hope it's just a discomfort and taking precaution to be ok at the AO, crossing fingers

She said it was plantar fascia and that it had been bothering her for quite a while. I suffer from that condition and it is extremely painful, especially if you stand all day like I do. Good luck to Gabine.

Thanks for that information, it doesn't look good but I hope she can do well in the AO

Wow... Kind of shocked at this deluge of injuries across the top 10. Someone is going to have a big chance to take advantage of being healthy in Oz.

The injuries of Serena, Halep, and Mugu are very concerning. I won't pick any of them to win AO. Pova, Vika, Woz have a good chance with these top three struggling. I am discounting Pove's left forearm injury because that is probably too minor to affect her.

Happy to see Woz and Vika playing well. If Vika could fix her serve, she can get into the top five. Whoever fixed Woz's forehand did a great job.

I would guess Maria's isn't that serious. If there's someone who would love to not have to face those three it's Maria. Vika has a big chance to take advantage of it if her confidence is back. Let's see how she does if she has to face a top 10 Kerber in the finals of Brisbane.

Should I have added Aga to the short list of contenders for the AO title? She has been on fire since splitting from Martina.

Cheering for Woz, Vika, Aga in the warm up tournaments.

Sloane has a new coach working with her (Kamau Murray). He is a good tennis teacher and will make her play more aggressively. I have worked with him and had a few of my students attend some of his coaching sessions. This is a good move for her.

WOW Vika! What a week! She is absolutely on fire. No better place to start a confidence build than her favorite place, Australia. I'm so happy to see Vika beat players she should be beating all week and then a big one in Kerber. This should give her more confidence against Mugu, Halep, and Sharapova. Lets see where she lands in two weeks, her ranking still isn't high enough to really shield her.

Kerber is $h1t though. Total choker so it's no big deal beating her.
