The Tournament:

The Indian Wells Open (also known as the Indian Wells Masters and as the BNP Paribas Open for sponsorship reasons) is an annual professional tennis tournament held in Indian Wells, California, United States. It is played on outdoor hardcourts at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, and is held in March. The tournament is part of the ATP Masters 1000 events on the ATP Tour and part of the WTA 1000 events on the WTA Tour.

The tournament is the best-attended tennis tournament outside the four Grand Slam tournaments (475,372 in total attendance during the 2019 event); it is often called the "fifth Grand Slam" in reference to this. The Indian Wells Tennis Garden has the second-largest permanent tennis stadium in the world, behind the US Open's Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. The Indian Wells Open is the premier tennis tournament in the Western United States and the second largest tennis tournament throughout the United States and the Americas (behind the US Open in the Eastern United States).

Preceding the Miami Open, it is the first event of the "Sunshine Double" — a series of two elite, consecutive hard court tournaments in the United States in early spring.

About Indian Wells:

Indian Wells is a city in Riverside County, California, in the Coachella Valley. Incorporated in 1967, it lies in between the cities of Palm Desert and La Quinta. As of the 2010 Census, the city population was 4,757.

Indian Wells will change their surface provider to Laykold - which is in use in Miami and US Open ( since 2020). The tournament had been using Plexipave for over 25 years.
Should be a little quicker and lower bouncing than usual, but the conditions of the location will keep it pretty slow.

An interesting IW. With Jannik out, there's nothing but question marks. Could be some surprises.

IMO IW's hasn't been the same since the days of COVID & the banning of Djokovic to enter the country! Alcaraz & Medvedev have tried to bring back normalcy after 20 yrs. of the Big 3 owning the tour & this event in particular taking 13 titles between them! :astonished-face::yawningface::fearful-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth:

There must be glue keeping Charley and Novaks names together in these draws…

:astonished-face:
Indeed, they were projected for the QF at the AO, also they were both drawn in the same half at Doha, were projected to meet in the SF, though both lost before
the SFs. Lets see if Alcaraz can defend his title at IW, he could lose a lot of points if he dosent.

Yeah he could do with jump starting his season!
He's actually had better results this year so far, compared to last year at the same time:

2024: AO QF, Buenos Aires (250) SF, Rio (500) R32 (6-3 overall)
2025: AO QF, Rotterdam (500) W, Doha (500) QF (11-2 overall)

That’s encouraging!

Zverev , has been disappointing, since the AO, still struggling mentally, Meddy's form has been up and down, more down than anything
Fritz has had abdominal issues, Alcaraz form, okay, though he has had his moments where plays well, then has dips, something he has to improve on.
Rublev finally found some form winning Doha,
To me there really isnt a player that is a favorite say in the Top Ten that is favorite to win.
Also I will be interested to see if the new surface has a bearing, reports I am hearing from some players Shelton for eg, that is is playing faster? we shall see.
BTW Novak could play his best friend Nick K in the 2nd round :)

I can't help but think that Medvedev and Zverev are fading out, or at least we're not far from it. It must be hard, peaking between one great generation and the rise of the next, with little if any gap in-between. I think they could remain relevant for a few more years, but I can imagine them both losing motivation. If any of that group surges for a nice second act, ironically it could be Stefanos.

Could be. Stefanos has survived the first flush of love and she hasn’t dumped him so the shock and delight might give him a dizzy head and he surprises us.

I sense it a lot with Medvedev though, he’s lost a few crucial matches with Sinner and was rapid to tweet about the drug ban. I think he’s already lost a lot of interest..
