Interesting. I think Sukova defeating Navratilova was as big, or bigger, simply because Martina was on such a huge tear, and they played on grass. I think Sukova was a 19 year old sapling at the time. But Serena's defeat, it still shocking to me... :cover

Vinci's was bigger I think. One of the biggest surprises I ever had I think was when Hana Mandilikova beat both Evert and Navratilova to win the '85 USO. Kind of different circumstances for this debate but that was a shock. Bartoli's win over Henin in Wimby '07 still boggles my mind.

I had a crush on Hana Mandlikova when I were a lad, but her victories in 1985 were less unexpected because she had already been earmarked as a champ about five years earlier. She reached the Wimbledon final in 1981 (I think) and flopped hideously against Evert. She had a beautiful game, a backhand as effortless and elegant as Henin. She was coached by Betty Stove, who reached the Wimbledon final in 1977, and then later Hana coached Jana Novotna. I kinda felt Novotna's Wimbledon title was reward for both Stove and Mandlikova too, a sort of lineage thing where eventually they got their mitts on gold, although only vicariously through Jana.

Silly, I know.

But anyway, Vinci or Sukova, they were earth shattering upsets... :popcorn

Yeah, I liked Hana too. When she was on, she was fun to watch. She had already won the AO and FO when she won her USO and she was ranked what? 3rd? Somewhere around there. But still Evert and Navratilova were so far ahead of everybody back then and it was almost impossible to beat them both back to back.

But if I had to pick, it would be Vinci. Still hasn't sunk in.

I see no huge headlines about that subject but there are plenty of fat headlines in all sorta news papers and magazines about Roberta Vinci's humiliation of Serena in the semifinal of the USO 2015 :)
I'm sure that you were still licking your deep and hurting wounds by your remark above - poor disillusioned tossip - Life can't be easy for you :lolz:

One of the biggest upsets is playing on TCC tonight; USO this past fall, women's semi, Vinci over Williams in 3 sets! Serena was going for the CYGS and was 2 matches from it and acquiring #22 to tie Graf! Whenever there's an upset like this, it usually happens this way; the champion up a set and cruising and then the winds change and it all goes SOUTH! Serena's carriage is what's so off-putting; rotten posture, disgust written all over her face for no good reason, and of course that sense of entitlement! She had no reason to be so moody unless her nerves finally got the best of her! She swore all was in check arriving in NY, but I guess she was deluding herself! I'm more impressed by how someone wins than the actual winning itself at times! If you're obnoxious about it, I'll barely remember the achievement! I guess I'm greedy wanting the whole package for a GOAT! :cover :ras:

UPDATE: She was up 2-0 in the 3rd with a point for 3-0 and it all went in the crapper! Like Nadal of late, Serena DF'd to give back her serve and advantage giving Vinci chances and confidence to pull off this HUGE upset; one for the ages! :clap

Actually, Serena won more points than Vinci in that match if I recall correctly. So, it is not that Serena was having an off day. She just did not play the big points well and Vinci was terrific at the net.

Nope. This isn't as big as the Vinci match. Kerber actually had a win over Serena before and she's a consistent top ten player. Vinci kind of came out of nowhere with a lower ranking and won the match of her life.

Well said! Vinci beating Serena was an order of magnitude bigger surprise than Kerbie beating Serena. Everybody knew that Kerbie has solid ground game to stand toe to toe with Serena even though not many thought she can win on her first try over SW in GS final.

Serena lost the match because of errors and some of the errors were mind boggling....easy put aways. She was very slow to the ball and her serve was gone...she gave the match away.

I'm just happy we finally got a new winner! The women have been such a disappointment of late allowing Serena to come and go as she pleases, retaining her #1 status! What is up with Halep? Kerber jumped to #2 with a major; finally someone at the top with a title of some stature! Players like Halep remind me of Caroline W. holding onto #1 with little on her resume! We talked about Kerber being fitter; can she take this to a new level of consistency? I don't watch women's tennis enough to know! :puzzled :nono  :cover

I don't really agree that she gave the match away. Kerber was excellent and caused a lot of the errors for Serena due to getting so many balls back. The missed volleys for example weren't poor technique as many people were saying but simply very hard to hit as they dipped so low over the net. Now she did of course hit some poor volleys where the court was wide open like on the match point. That was a horrific miss. But there were others that were just sloppy and not down to pressure from Kerber.
